The TARDIS made a groaning sound, and the Doctor and Rose were violently thrown from side to side. Oi! Don't look at me like that, I know that does happen occaisionnaly…okay, no need to glare, it happens from time to- ow! Kicking isn't allowed!
Fine, fine, the TARDIS was experiencing a rough voyage, and the Doctor and Rose were being thrown around, something that happened often. Very often.
There, happy now? Good.
However, this time it was even more violent than usual, and once the TARDIS finally stabilized, all of the lights went out.
"What?" asked the Doctor.
He then felt the urge to say it again, this time several octaves higher.
"What?"
Rose, by now used to this behavior, simply laughed, and reached for the door. If they were about to die a horrible and painful death (for the third time that week) she might as well see what was outside.
After she opened the door, what she saw was a very normal street, in what could have been London. Inside the TARDIS she heard a muffled thump and a yelp. This time, both she and the TARDIS took a moment to roll their eyes (or at least give the mental equivalent in the TARDIS' case). Honestly, men.
Rose picked up a newspaper from the bin. Now don't laugh you lot, and yes, I'm looking at you in the back. This was one of the most useful ways of gathering information in the universe and, fortunately, several parallel ones as well.
Rose frowned at the paper. On it there was a lot of gibberish, and while that wasn't really surprising, really, some of the politicians!, it was actually in a language that she couldn't understand. Now, you may be thinking, travelling in time and space, there's a lot of languages that she wouldn't understand, but you would be a) wrong, and b) probably have not watched the series. After all, we all know that there was a nifty translation device that the TARDIS had, so that the viewers wouldn't have to spend most of the episode squinting at the subtitles… hold on, sorry, I'm breaking the fourth wall. Bad habit that.
Back to the newspaper. Luckily for Rose, at that moment the Doctor came out of the TARDIS, limping slightly.
"Sorry about that Rose, we seem to have landed in an alternate universe. That should be impossible of course, but impossible never seems to stay that way for long with me. Anyway, we're stuck here for the moment, the TARDIS needs a little time to get enough power to piece the Void, and bring us back to our universe…" and he would have gone on in that vein, if not for the fact that Rose shoved the paper she was holding at him.
"Why isn't it being translated?" she asked.
The Doctor replied with a five minute speech that basically boiled down to she was using all her energy to recharge, and therefore couldn't be bothered with translating things.
"So what language is it? Where are we?" said Rose.
"What do you mean where are we? We're in London of course. I mean, it says so on the…Rose, why did you pick up a newspaper written in welsh?"
"That's welsh? Why's it in welsh?"
"Weeel; parallel universes, infinite number of possibilities, the Welsh probably conquered the English here, that's all." And with that, he was off like a small, excited child. Rose followed, groaning internally, and pulling her coat just the bit tighter around her. Of all the days to wear a T-shirt with St. George's cross on!
