Prologue

"All salvation is temporary."

This statement was undeniably true. Though, why it had taken him so long to figure it out, he had no idea.

He had only been fooling himself. However, he had had assistance in that area.

They had built a wall – a well-constructed one – that kept them all safe. But when were they ever safe?

All the things he had had before – the eyes, the Butterfly, the Snitch, Hat Tuesdays, the DMCs about books, good books, the burdens of being a Piano Man, and all of the insults that came with it – it was all temporary.

The harsh fact was that all of this at once was too much, too much to lose. He tried not to let it bother him, but being immune to vulnerability was a challenge in itself.

At least he tried to think that he was immune, but one sudden spark of emotion would be enough to light that cigarette and send him to a place he didn't want to go.

The cigarette rested on his salty lips - never lit - but this time he was actually considering doing something about it.

That would have sent her into a wild rampage of fury. Yes, her eyes would be blazing, telling him off like she was his mother. But she couldn't do that now, could she?

Alone. He belonged alone. That was another fact he had gotten used to.

Things had been different before, different than he expected.

He had almost had a life. He had almost had a family.

But he had lost that salvation.
