It happened late one night in the middle of October. It was probably three in the morning and Nonoko was still wide awake with a mug of coffee in one hand and a mechanical pencil in the other. She took a small sip of her coffee, causing the hot liquid to burn the tip of her tongue and then quickly scanned the paragraph she had just read.
It was a pretty simple paragraph, but her brain just wouldn't register. The words seemed like complete gibberish to her. After reading the same paragraph two more times, she growled out in frustration and threw her pencil at the white mocking wall in front of her. In the process, she somehow managed to tilt the mug, thus resulting in the coffee spilling onto her left hand. Biting back a howl, she dropped the mug onto the floor and then made a dash for the bathroom. She could hear the mug as it shattered into several pieces, but she could hardly care less. The mug was insignificant.
Once Nonoko reached the bathroom, she immediately went over to the sink and opened the tap. She let the water flow on top of her left hand and then sighed with relief as the burning sensation ceased down a bit.
Sighing for what seemed like the umpteenth time; Nonoko moved over to the towel stack and grabbed the first one her hands fell upon.
She carefully patted the towel on her left hand. After she was done, her eyes flickered onto the mirror in front of her and in that split second, Nonoko just knew.
Her eyes, which was once very lively and full of humour, now reflected only ennui. There was nothing in them anymore, nothing at all. Her skin was a sickeningly colour of pale and Nonoko wondered how she hadn't noticed before. She had never really paid much heed to her appearance but this was downright shameful. She hadn't known she looked this bad.
No wonder..
She turned away from the mirror and stared onto the white marble floor of the bathroom.
There was nothing wrong with her life... but there was nothing special about it either.
She could've sworn that she hadn't always been like this. She had been so optimistic that her positive radiations had outshone Mikan Sakura's.
But of course, things changed.
Or, to put it more simply, she changed.
She didn't know why she changed. Everything in her life was the same. Well, almost the same besides the fact that Koko and Anna had a baby girl, Sumire and Ruka got offered to be models for American Eagle, Mikan was a high-scale interior designer, Natsume and Kitsu were national level soccer players and Hotaru was the youngest billionaire in the continent.
And where was she?
Stuck in her stupid college dorm.
Yes, things certainly hadn't changed.
She couldn't remember the last time she had met any of them in person, sure she just talked to them via facebook and twitter and occasionally on the phone, but it wasn't the same.
Of course, when Wakako got married to Mochu and somehow had 'forgotten' to invite her to the reception, Nonoko knew that things were simply wonderful.
To top it all off, she had the unduly support of her parents. They guided her no matter what. Her mum always said words of encouragement and never let her feel like she was useless.
Her lips curled up into a sardonic smile.
Useless..
As she lifted her head back up from the marble floor, her eyes flickered to the mug which lay shattered into pieces on the ground.
She knew how she was going to solve her tiny problem. In all honesty, it would quite easy.
She'd just have to break.
After all, like the mug, she was completely and totally insignificant.
