He
scratched away at the paper, trying to carve words; the quill having
dried out long ago, ink spilled all over. Almost mentioned that he
was happy, but he couldn't remember how to spell it one
p or two?
He made shoes. In between fits of giggles, he explained to the
wall that it was from a book. One he had borrowed from her
trunk long ago.
"It was the best of times," he told the
mouse, "with her. And it was the worst of times, because my
house disowned me."
The mouse squeaked and the walls might
have laughed.
