Drago Bludvist, born Dyggvi Bludvist, was different from all of his peers and an outcast in his tribe.
He was the youngest of his siblings and considered an accident - a mistake by his parents. He would often grow up hearing how he should never have even been born.
Feeling like a runt, Dyggvi often lived in his own world and wandered about the island, exploring caves and places that others strayed away from.
One evening, he snuck out of his house and ended up following a glow coming from a river leading inside a cave full of ice crystals.
It was unlike anything Dyggvi had seen before.
Before he knew it, he heard a sound.
It was a beast, a dragon.
Dyggvi had only heard of these creatures in stories and folktales, and felt a bewildered excitement. The dragon didn't look fully matured, it seemed to be a lost baby. Dyggvi made an attempt to reach out for it but it scurried away.
Dyggvi ran back to the town to tell everyone of what he saw but no one paid him any mind. His voice fell deaf to their ears. Still, Dyggvi wouldn't give up. He decided he should bring the dragon with him for them to see. Maybe they would believe him then.
The very next day, he visited the same cave only to find it abandoned at first.
Until the dragon suddenly cornered him, his ice cold breath making Dyggvi shiver.
The dragon backed away eventually and Dyggvi grabbed a stick from the ground and began growling loudly, trying to caught the young dragon's attention.
The dragon cocked his head curiously, looking at him funnily before letting out a loud roar and disappearing into the water.
By the time Dyggvi was fifteen, a war had erupted.
The neighboring tribes were after their wealth and riches, and began attacking and looting them.
While his tribesmen started planning out their counterattacks, Dyggvi attempted to convince them to act with rationality and try communicating with the enemy. He had yet to tell them of the dragon he had befriended, and now with the ongoing war, there didn't seem to be an opportune moment.
During one particular attack, Dyggvi's older brother Bard Bludvist lost his life.
Believing Dyggvi to be in danger, he sacrificed his own life to shield Dyggvi from harm. Bard died on the spot while Dyggvi ended up wounded. His parents paid him no mind though or checked for his well being. They were too devastated by the loss of their eldest son. Their pride and their richness.
While Dyggvi lay in the cold night, shivering from the fever that had overtaken him, he heard his parents whisper; "Dyggvi should have died instead of Bard."
These words would come to haunt him for the rest of his life.
Nearly a year later, Dyggvi was in full control of the dragon he had befriended.
The intertribal stride was still ongoing and grown even more vicious. While their defense had been upgraded, Dyggvi decided the only way to end the conflict once and for all was to lure his friend out of his hiding place.
And so he did.
When the dragon exhaled, everything was covered in ice and it was as if time stood still.

I personally think Drago has a lot in common with Hiccup. If Hiccup had gone down the angry vengeance route, he wouldn't be very different from Drago, except maybe nicer to dragons and more vicious towards humans.
