A/N: Written for Schermionie's "5, 10, 20, 50, 70, 100 fandoms" challenge on the HPFC. I really like the idea of exploring Sayu and Light's sibling relationship, so this is where this idea came frome.
Sayu had no feelings positive or negative about sports until Light made her play a game of tennis with him in the afternoon.
"I feel so out of place," Sayu whined once they arrived at the tennis court. Her legs felt bare underneath the shorts she was forced to wear and the shirt she wore seemed to fit funny. Plus the sneakers she wore were tacky and horribly colored. At least she got to choose a cute visor to wear to protect her eyes from the too bright sun.
"You're a beginner, it's completely acceptable to feel as if you're out of place," Light remarked, seemingly unbothered by wearing a similarly silly combination of shirt, shorts and shoes. Sayu firmly believed that Light made them wear silly clothes to play a game she didn't know how to play on purpose so she could feel as embarrassed as possible. Despite her reluctance, she didn't mind getting to do fun things with her brother.
Sometimes, with how utterly brilliant and ambitious he was, Sayu briefly thought that he deliberately avoided her as if he was too good for her because he could probably do so much more fascinating things with his time. She'd try to appreciate this time with him, because she had this somewhat irrational fear of suddenly losing him to some uncontrollably large force.
"Sayu, you're falling behind. Could you please hurry up? Or else we won't get a tennis court!" Light said, his voice full of a childlike enthusiasm Sayu never heard before. She smiled.
"I'm coming!" She said, quickening her pace to meet Light's.
"Here's a good court. Let's play," Light said, practically bouncing out of his brand new, blindingly white shoes.
"So how do you start?" Sayu asked, completely baffled at how tennis worked.
"I'll stay at this end, and you go to the other end. I'll hit this yellow ball to you," Light dug through his bag and brought out a can of balls the color of a highlighter. They were smaller than she imagined. Guess that meant that they were easier to lose with a bad hit. Or, in a more positive light, less painful if she accidentally got hit in the face. Either way, Sayu still remained hesitant about tennis.
"Then I'll hit it to you while you're on the other side of the court, then you hit it back to me, and repeat until we get tired. Or the ball gets out of the court," Light explained.
"I'm not sure what'll come first..." Sayu said, and Light smiled.
"Get ready, cause I'm gonna serve in a few seconds." Sayu picked up a racket, held it tightly in her right palm, got in place and waited. Light raised his racket and hit the ball. She scrambled for it and whacked it as hard as she could.
"Sayu, there's no need to hit it so hard!" Light explained in a voice that seemed a little too high. The ball whizzed by his face, missing his cheek by a hair.
"Sorry," she said cheekily.
"Loosen up a little. It's just a game! Now let's try again." Light served again, and this time, Sayu hit the ball softer as Light explained. Light hit it back and the game went on for longer than Sayu expected. No wonder Light chose to play the game so much, it was actually kind of, dare she say it, fun.
Just as she got comfortable playing, the sun began to lower in the sky.
"It's getting late. I think we should head home..." Light said, gathering all the stuff he brought with them.
"You sure?" Sayu asked with a laugh.
"Sure as I can be. There's always another time." They walked back home with huge grins.
