Sometimes Yami found Mai Valentine very frustrating. She hid her emotions too well and she was too stubborn, even with her own life was at stake. In a duel, she would put her faith into her own skills and her cards, but she wouldn't give in to defeat unless it was forced upon her by fate. She believed herself and only herself, and no one else.
Yami wished that Mai wouldn't have be so independent all the time, and be herself around the others, especially Joey. Yes, He knew that Joey took a liking to her ever since the day they met, but she never really revealed how she felt about him. He assumed it was the after-effect of being in solitude and independence all her life, but he knew that she would need Joey, the others and himself when the time was right. She just had to let them know that she was ready to be surrounded by the ones who care for her.
Mai's complexity was a good thing; it brought an air of mystery around her, but what she believed in was to rely on oneself and no one else mattered. She believed in seclusion while he himself held the belief of loyalty and friendship to isolation. But he knew that for the both of them, what you believe in is your business.
