Originally this was supposed to be quite light hearted and fun drabble... but as is often wont with my muse, it quickly found its way into the angst field. I promise no happy endings here. It's still a response to a prompt from '30 Drabbles', which it is named after, but I wanted to post it seperately today.
Written because it's L's birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY YOU WONDERFUL, AWKWARD, GENIUS DETECTIVE, YOU!
Assumptions made about L's past and SPOILER for his real name and age.
So grab a cake and a coffee, kick off your shoes, pull up your feet and enjoy it for him!
Disclaimer: I don't own Death Note or it's character, but I DO own this snippet.
And In The Years Past
It had seemed only sensible, when choosing his birthday (somewhere around age six, after reading about Alice and the Hatter), that in being his own choice, the day in question should somehow suit him personally. In the end it had proved a surprisingly easy decision.
And although, yes, he greatly desired to grow older and wiser and to become the Greatest Detective the world had ever known, young Lawliet was in fact much happier knowing that now there would be candles (as well as an extra layer of icing) on his pumpkin shaped cake.
Years later, (after reading thousands of pointless files and millions upon millions of useless words) October 31st appeared out of nowhere. The KIRA investigation was failing to all but him and the Great Detective L almost wished for ignorance as his birthday treat.
Instead, for the first time in his life, he felt a desperate urge to live another year smother any childlike joy at seeing the familiar cake. He closed his eyes tight to block out the glare. At a careful breath, all twenty-five candles flickered into smoke.
Watari smiled, nodding quietly.
L looked away before he could make a wish.
And suddenly twenty-five wasn't that many anymore.
