The sun had just begun to filter through the curtains when Zack Addy's alarm clock began blaring. Groaning, he hit the snooze button and the sound ceased. Grumbling about it being too early to get up, he rolled over and went back to sleep.

Five minutes later it started again, but the anthropologist knew he couldn't ignore the annoying little machine. He glanced at the clock on the way to the bathroom.

"Oh, God!"

8:00am

He was due at the lab in 30 minutes. The lab that was a 25 minute drive away. Even worse, Dr Brennan was away in Denver with Booth and Cam was sick. His first day in charge of the lab and he was running super late.

Ten minutes later he was showered and dressed. Praying for a lack of gridlocked traffic, he grabbed an apple and sprinted out of the door.

Zack spent the drive to the Jeffersonian in a quiet panic. He stalled the car twice, his hands were shaking and he couldn't concentrate on the road. After half an hour of practising his apology speech, he finally reached his parking spot.

He glanced at the clock as he exited the car. 8:40. not too bad. Later than he'd ever been, but he'd manage.

He ran into the building fumbling with his scan card. He finally reached the lab platform and screeched to a half in front of Hodgins and an annoyed looking Angela.

"You're late." Toe tapping, hands on hips and tight lips. Even Zack knew enough about human body language to interpret her mood.

Zack was glad that his cheeks were still red from the running; it covered up the blush that crept its way up onto his face.

"I set my alarm wrong." He spoke to fast as he performed his car rehearsed speech. "And the traffic was terrible. I'm sorry, don't tell Dr Brennan."

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Hodgin's mouth twitch. His body began shaking and he burst out laughing in front of a bemused Zack. Angela had now started giggling as Zack started in confusion at the two of them.

Over Angela's shoulder he saw the museum clock tower hit quarter to eight. Slowly realisation dawned on Zack as Hodgins finally managed to calm his voice.

"We changed your clock, dude. And the one in your car…we thought of everything! But Man, you should have seen your face!"

Looking at the calendar, the final piece of the puzzle fell into place for Zack.

"The first of April…" he whispered.

"April Fools!" chorused Angela and Hodgins.
