In the Darkness of the Night

In the darkness of the night,
All that is audible is his voice.
His lonely lament echoes through the emptiness,
As he kneels on the ground,
Red rose to his hand.

His breath comes in shallow rasps,
His heart is bruised and empty.
All dreams have been shattered,
His love has been lost.
He is all but an empty shell.

Slowly and groggily he rises,
As he desperately reaches for a small, velvet stool.
Carefully he pulls himself towards it,
And delicately lowers himself down.

With his long, slender fingers outstretched,
He gently caresses the cold ivory keys.
Leisurely he constructs a chord,
And with all his might,
His fingers make contact with the keys,
Sending out a disjointed, muddled sound into the darkness.

His anger is transferred through the organ.
His strange melody is dramatic and saddened.
With every pulsating chord,
His heart breaks a little more.
She whom he loved,
She whom he cherished everyday.

Why was life so cruel to him?
Why was it that his mother never cared for him?
Never said 'I love you,"
Never treated him like a human.
She left him alone, to fend for himself.

After years of heartache,
He found home and shelter.
Living beneath the desolate ground,
Hiding from society.

He was regarded as Hell,
Nobody dared to find him.
He was a nightmare,
Ruining pleasant thoughts.
Yet they never knew he was a mortal man.
A man with a soul,
A man with a broken heart.

His melody ends without warning,
As he angrily slams his fists to the keys,
Making a sound more distressing than his gloomy composition.
Stifled sobs escape his lips,
As he slumps his head and drops his arms.
He lets his tears flow freely.
In the darkness of the night,
All that can be heard are his moans of sorrow.

Author's Note:

This is a poem I wrote for a competition at my school.
I wrote it because I love Phantom of the Opera and wanted to write a poem describing my view.

This is my first piece I have ever put up on FanFiction, and I would really appreciate it if you could review it once you've read it, so I can become a better writer!
