a/n: a drabble based on a tumblr prompt. have fun (:
"Agh, this is bull."
Thunder clapped overhead as Gray threw his polo around his girlfriend's shoulders, groaning as the rain showered heavily above the roof of the sidewalk they were talking shelter under.
"It doesn't look like it will calm very soon," Juvia pondered, looking overhead. "The forecast this morning did warn Juvia though. She just forgot to bring her umbrella."
"Man, I'd run you home if we had one," Gray collapsed on the ground beside her and snaked his arm over her shoulders so she was leaning on him. "Did you get wet? You might catch a cold."
"Juvia doesn't get colds." She chuckled and playfully ticked her boyfriend's nose. "And if anyone here is more prone to getting one, it's you, Gray-sama. Please wear your shirt, Juvia's fine—"
"Nah, keep it. I'm better without it, and it's pretty chilly."
"All the more why Gray-sama should wear it back on!" Juvia gasped and began to strip the clothing from her shoulders.
Gray snorted. "No, put it back on you." He caught her fingers and closed his fist around them, then giving her a back hug. "You'll get a cold. I'm taking you home as soon as we can."
Juvia thought for a moment then stiffened in his embrace — she suddenly pushed him away and Gray toppled backwards, gaping at his girlfriend with an (endearingly) shocked face.
But that was nothing compared to the expression he made when she hopped off her stance and ran off to the open rain.
"Juvia, what the hell—?! " Gray shouted as he ran after her and caught her hand before. "You're gonna c —"
"Gray-sama…" Juvia turned to face him sharply, crunching her brows together. "What's going on? You know well that I can't ever get sick from the rain. Juvia is part of the rain, just as it is a part of her. You know that."
There was a pause as they simply stared at each other, her eyes burning in contrast to the cold while he eyed her wistfully, carefully weighting his thoughts.
"I know." He whispered quietly, his voice breaking. "But it's a darker part of you. The rain gave you a a horrible past and terrible experiences— I hate seeing you waking up in the middle of the night crying whenever a storm's going, or sulking in a corner whenever the rain ruins everyone's day." Gray buried his face on her shoulder and twined his fingers at her back, pulling her close. "I know this fucking weather phenomenon pains you the most, Juvia."
It was her pain that worsens his, and they both knew that. Gray didn't want to lose her. Everyone he loved ended up dying and it was Juvia who taught him to let go and open his heart — which he slowly began to do and it did him well, but the fear still continued to haunt him.
A simper made its way to her lips as she snaked her arms around his neck, beckoning him to her even closer. His embrace tightened and they stayed like that, both cold and completely drenched under a storm, with Gray only half-clothed and his shirt doing it's best to keep her shoulders and back warm.
"Juvia loves Gray-sama so much," she grinned. "more than anything. But do you know what, Gray-sama?"
"…What?"
"Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass by — it's about learning to dance in the rain." she whispered softly. "Juvia learned that when she met you."
Gray held her tighter in his arms and told her how much he loved her.
He was never letting go.
