---
Life for Chuck Bass ended when his father died and began once again when Gossip Girl posted that damned picture in which his supposed best friend kissed Blair Waldrof in the snow.
Although, years after, philosophizing about it all, he'll say it felt quite the opposite. It was at his father's funeral he felt helpless and blind, like a newborn wailing without words and grasping for air in a world suddenly unknown and terrifying, mourning for something nameless and vaguely remembered.
And it was when he saw that Gossip Girl post, when his eyes flickered over the image of Nathaniel and Blair lip-locking, both looking so beautiful and pure surrounded by an immaculate frame, that he felt life slowly ebbing out of him.
It was then- while his chest heaved and his jaw clenched- that he felt clocks resetting in his head and knew Time would make sense again.
He wrapped his shock around himself like armour, a pretence of indifference, until he was alone and quiet inside his room, where he could finally admit that while he didn't deserve Blair, he didn't deserve this, either…
Not from Nathaniel, at least.
He's just the littlest bit disgusted with himself for not being surprised. Of course Nate would have no problem with taking Blair away. This is the same person who was ready to use his ex-girlfriend last year, just because the almighty Archibalds told him to do so, with no remorse about abusing her feelings, with the only regret being for what the sacrifice of putting up with them would mean for his so called freedom.
Only people like Nate can afford to spend their life drifting carefree toward something better: there is always a convenient shore ready to welcome them when waves grow tempestuous.
Everyone else is just too busy to try and stay afloat before violent currents draw them asunder.
Chuck Bass? He knows what it takes to survive on his own and you can bet he will get back what is his. By any means necessary, because Blair is worth that much and she told him she loved him. Loved. Him.
No way will he allow any self-serving, naive-looking friends to make that untrue with meaningless re-visitations of ages past.
