DISCLAIMER: I do not own Calvin and Hobbes, otherwise I'd be Bill Watterson.
It wasn't odd to his parents at all that Calvin wanted a pair of sunglasses. Oh sure, however odd and troubled he may have been, Calvin just wanted to look cool for his friends, and his parents knew that, even though they were uncertain about him wearing a pair at any place other than outside.
Of course, Calvin learned the hard way in school that they were not allowed to be worn under any circumstances. Upon not following specific instructions to take them off during school hours, Miss Wormwood put Calvin in detention at the end of the day.
"Now Calvin," she said to Calvin as he sat in front of her, "is there anything that you've learned not to do today?"
"Yes, Miss Wormwood," Calvin replied, "I learned when and when not to look fashionable towards others."
Miss Wormwood sighed in frustration. "Five years until retirement..." she reminded herself.
