Chapter 1
data-p-id=d13a751e67f8bcae3b7c476805c8bf3b,I concentrate harder on the boulder as I attempt to move it, my body straining as I will the object to move. I let out an uneven breath as I relax my body, my knees giving out as I slowly sink to the ground, too exhausted to care that my knees are scratched and my muscle so tight I am sure they will snap at any moment. I close my eyes and cover my face with my hands, trying to re-center myself. I feel his presence before he speaks a word, but I do not dare uncover my face, out of fear of seeing the disappointed look on his face.
data-p-id=b306156a768681c5f3cea51b6485846b,"Get up, Ben." Uncle Luke says, patting my shoulder lightly.
data-p-id=67aa4c10964d33e70d667d5948c42ce9,I nod, slowly standing as I stare directly down at my feet, not wanting to meet his eyes.
data-p-id=876e2892a00a642d89ed16a14cd106cc,"Ben look at me." Uncle Luke says, lifting my chin up with his mechanical hand. I was expecting disappointment in his face, but all i see is comfort, the feeling of failure begins to leave my body, but not completely.
data-p-id=35c50c4419328927b2241a827ca85474,"I want you to close your eyes and focus, block out any thought or feeling besides the force, and the boulder in front of you."
data-p-id=94461de2b7183e90ab0ae27bf5365be6,I grit my teeth, angry at myself. I had done this several times and never made the boulder move an inch. "I have already done that ten times, I am just too weak." i say, looking Uncle Luke in the eyes.
data-p-id=d1c1f2c0bc854d58e87eda10badb616b,Uncle Luke shakes his head. "You are not weak, Ben. You just have to focus harder, you need to find the force within you and be able to wield it."
data-p-id=085daffc30a9ee64d2b99a3eb8cd8254,I take a deep breath, nodding to my uncle as I turn my attention back on the boulder. I sink back down to the ground. I close my eyes, blocking out the sounds of the other students, the wind blowing lightly in the crisp cool morning, and focus only on myself and the boulder, digging deeper within to connect with the force. As I sink deeper within myself I find it, willing it to go up, willing it to extend outward towards the object before me, but I sense no movement. It just sits there, as if it is waiting to tugged on it's leash, like a pet. Anger floods through me again. I will not fail Uncle Luke again I think to myself. I pull harder on that power, tugging it, trying to make it move, but it still sits there; lifeless and without purpose. My anger grows as I pull harder and harder, when a scream erupts from my mouth, anger and frustration flooding over me like a wave crashing over the ocean's surface. I pull again, and the force springs alive within me. I can feel the power surging within my veins, power I have never felt before, it feels like I could send winds to the east with a flick my hand, or make volcanos erupt with just an exhaled breath.
data-p-id=8bafd5146fc82bc635898204b4ff3c59,I open my eyes, seeing not only the boulder in front of me in the air, but several. The other students, who had been practicing moving boulders as well, no longer had them in front of them, because they are all mid air, because of me. I smile at the work I've done, the power that had seemed to be caged like a beast and has now unlocked.
data-p-id=5e01955f507cd7696988fdca2b8b149b,I look behind me at Uncle Luke, expecting to see pride, seeing the powers i have finally unlocked after months of trying and failing, after months of fear of his disapproval. But all i see in his eyes is fear.
data-p-id=ed80227d701972fd8e6f4fe24d62c016,A mix of sorrow and anger floods through me as I set the boulders down, starring Uncle Luke in the eyes the entire time. Without another word, Uncle Luke turns away from me, walking towards the main building of the training facility.
data-p-id=3df6eaed29b864ddd4195f16ca2de1d1,I clench my fists together, storming off into my hut. Once i enter inside, I throw the vase sitting on a small table near the door, shattering it into bits, angry. I had been angry before at not being able to do the things the other kinds could, but now that I can I am looked at with disgust and hate.
data-p-id=62d98bd02d9dd1bc1febcd33c18816f7,"These are your first steps." I hear a voice say. I whirl around, but find no one behind me. I run out of the door, a cold dark feeling spreading throughout me as I search for whoever had said that, but there is no one in site. I run a hand through my hair, returning back to my hut, and staying there till the sun rises the next morning.
