Chapter 1
~Hogran Household~
When Matthew first got his Hogwarts's letter, he thought it was a scam to make money off of anyone gullible enough to believe it, but the letters kept coming. His sister started to get worried. Matthew thought nothing of it. Since his Mom died and his dad left them, Haley worried about almost everything. Matthew was sure that if the letters weren't a scam, then they were a pranks from his mates at school. It was when they started flying through open windows and appearing in his boxes of Lucky Charms did he start to wonder.
"This has gone on too long" His sister finally decreed one evening.
They were sitting on the couch in the living room of their apartment. It was sparsely furnished and a little messy from the excess mail. He looked away from the television where a rerun of the Simpsons was playing. She had that determined look on her face that actually made her look her age. She had the kind of face that no one takes seriously. If you didn't know her, you'd probably guess she was sixteen before her actual age of twenty one.
When Matthew didn't say anything, she continued.
"Were are going to get to the bottom of this." She stated. "Hand me a letter."
He reached over and picked one randomly off the floor before returning to his program. Haley studied the letter closely. He had already googled Why do I keep getting letters from Hogwarts in the mail? , but nothing came up.
"Alright, I think that we-"
The doorbell rang. Sighing, Matthew turned off the T.V. and opened the door. When he saw who was standing outside, a grin spread throughout his face.
"Mrs. Duffle Please, come in." Mathew had a soft spot for his neighbor, Mrs. Duffle. She was a peculiar old woman who lived alone most of the time. Her son Timothy was away on business most of the year, so she often invited Mathew over whenever she was feeling lonely. He suspected she was partially senile. More time than one he had caught her murmuring nonsense about muggles and quidditch and other things that didn't make sense.
Mathew took her coat and hat and hung them up. Mrs. Duffle hurried inside and almost knocked over a lamp.
"My dear," She said "I'm quite clumsy today. Did I break anything? I'll be happy to repay you in case-"
Haley stopped her before she could continue.
"It's quite alright Mrs. Duffle, no damage is done." She led Mrs. Duffle over to the couch, careful not to let her bump into anything else. "Now, what can I do for you?"
"Oh," She gasped, remembering why she had come, "I saw all the owls outside and I thought I might come by to see if- oh!" She looked over to where Haley had left the letter.
"May I?" she gestured to the letter. Haley and Matthew shared skeptical glances. Finally, Haley nodded.
Mrs. Duffle removed her gloves and turned the letter carefully over in her hands. Taking glasses off, she looked closer at the writing on the front.
"Oh my," Smiling, she handed the letter to Matthew. "You've got a genuine Hogwarts letter on your hands."
They waited for her to continue, but she just sat there, smiling at them.
Suddenly, she jumped up.
"It's almost July 31st," She announced to Haley and Matthew, expecting them to be as worried as her.
"Have you sent your reply yet?" She asked Matthew, when they didn't say anything.
"I-"
"No, of course not," She continued, ignoring him. "You're muggles and you haven't got an owl.
No matter. You'll write your reply and I'll mail it using my owl, Orvil."
At this point Matthew had no idea what she was talking about.
"Dear me, you probably don't have any of your books yet, and your robes and wand will need to be taken care of as well. I'll have to take you to Diagon Alley with me tomorrow, it's the only place where such things can be purchased."
"Excuse me," Haley interrupted. "What exactly is going on?"
"Oh," Mrs. Duffle looked at them, realizing she'd left out some crucial information. "Matthew is a wizard."
Well, there you go! I'm sorry if it's a bit slow right now as I was introducing all of the characters. I also want to be clear, that this is set one year in the future, 19 years after the battle of Hogwarts. It will also be based off of some ideas from Tumblr.
