No ones POV
Nan looked out of the abandoned barns window. Cob webs hung loose on every wall, stains on every floor. The rotting wood creaked beneath her paws sending a slight tremor down her back. She had felt someone watching her; almost like a set of eyes burned themselves on her back. She told herself it was nothing but the uneasy feeling in her stomach made that hard to believe.
She walked over to the bed of hay she had made herself to sleep on. The hay was old, a few years old, and was very wet. Not only was it wet but it was uncomfortable. No matter how hard she tried lumps remained in every area of the hay. She laid herself onto the hay and let out a sigh.
"I could be sleeping in a real bed. With a family. And real food."
Nan covered herself the best she could with her long burnt brown tail. She flicked her dark tipped ears when a fly landed on them.
"Maybe I am a freak for a good reason. I want to be a hybrid. It makes me who I am. Even if it means hiding from my former friends."
Nan let her eyes close and on that thought she drifted into slumber.
No one's POV
A fire flickered in Kai's eyes, anyone could tell he was dissapointed. "Sensei, why did you wake us up in the middle of the night? It's what 3 o'clock in the morning!"
Wu glared at Kai, "You are a ninja. You are supposed to do this, no matter what time it is."
Zane put his cold hand on Kai's shoulder, "If Sensei is asking us to do this it must be important." Zane walked to the round granite counter and grabbed his silver shurikens.
Kai bit his lip and sighed, "Fine, but tell us what we're getting ourselves into before we leap into action."
Sensei Wu nodded, "It is a necklace created by the first inhabitants of Ninjago. Made from the volcano of Ezra. It is said that after a certain spell is announced any person you wish could be turned into a hybrid."
Kai looked puzzled, "Hybrid?"
Sensei Wu coughed and continued speaking, "A hybrid: Part animal part human. They can be anything from reptiles to mammals. Some are very dangerous and others are just fine. They never start out as hybrid though. Most used to be ordinary people like you. Be careful who you trust and what you say to people. As part of the curse the hybrids are distrustful of humans, even thought they used to be one. They are scared that when people find out about their secret they will kill them."
Zane raised a brow and looked with wide eyes at Wu, "Why would anyone want to hurt someone?"
"Zane, because some people are monsters. They kill people for money, for entertainment. Some people believe that attacking and killing hybrids is easier, because of there animal DNA they are easier to fool. Put a bone onto a dog hybrid, and you have an instant trap. You need to go along now. The longer we wait the more risks you have."
Kai nodded and apologized for being so stubborn, "I guess the others will need a little more manliness for this trip." Kai grinned and flexed his muscles, all he got from Sensei was an eye roll.
The ninja jumped on their dragons and dissapeared into the foggy night sky.
Nan's POV
A toss and then a turn, another toss. Turn. This was Nan's night routine. The uncomfortable hay stack and the uneasy feeling in her stomach kept her awake all night. Nan rolled her eyes and stepped out of her make shift bed.
"What is it?" Nan hissed in her head cursing whatever was keeping her awake. She stretched out her hands and started digging through the hay, to see if anything was making the lumps. She kept digging and after a few pieces of hay got lodged underneath her nail she found the object keeping her awake.
Nan gasped and widened her eyes. It was a beautiful necklace. Purple and blue stone rightly packed together to for a circle. A gold chain only a few inches long tangled up in her hand. Her hand rubbed the stone feeling the smoothness and stopped when she felt something ingraved in it. "Wu?"
Wu sounded like a male name and she didn't want to know why he had a feminine necklace. Maybe he had a wife or a girlfriend? The necklace looked old, some of the stone was chipped away and dirt was caked in the cracks. Maybe it was a hand me down?
Nan was almost too caught up in the beauty and mystery of the necklace she almost didn't hear a shuffle come from the front of a barn.
"Haha. What if this place is a haunted barn? That would be awesome!" A high pitched voice rang through the barn. Normal people wouldn't have been able to hear it, his voice was barely above a whisper, but with her sensitive hearing she could hear it clearly.
"Jay! Shut up! What if someone's in here? We don't want them to hear us!" a deeper voice harshly whispered.
Nan looked around the room frantically, her tail worked it's way between her legs and moved back and forth when she paced. Her strawberry blonde hair itched her neck and suddenly all of her senses became stronger. Her breathing became rapid and she starting pacing.
There was nowhere in the barn to hide. There was nothing much in the barn at all though. Some old wet hay, some rotting horse stables, the old smell of animal dung, and spider bandages: used to protect horses when they had a cut.
"Maybe they're friends."
Nan nodded to herself and grabbed the bandages. This was the only way she could protect herself. She carefully took the silky bandage and pinned down her ears and tail. It hurt but she was willing to do anything to make a friend or two.
Nan bit her pale lip as she continued thinking, "Now a horse bandage on my head sure doesn't look suspicious."
Nan's amber eyes flashed across the room in a hurry hoping to find a scarf or a hat. Anything to cover up. She could hear them getting closer.
"If this place is haunted then the ghost must really stink! It smells like an elephant crapped all over the place then let it rot for fifty years." The same voice from earlier, Jay, went on.
"Jay, we're here for the necklace. Not for some make believe ghost hunt."
Nan's mouth gaped they weren't here for her, they were here for the necklace. Nan held on to the necklace protectively and continued looking for a hat. Hanging on the wall she found one, a blue hat. The hat was old you could tell and on it was the word "Monster"
She held back tears, was the hat taunting her? Nan shook it off and slid it over her head. It was a little tight, and it felt like it belonged to a child. She smiled remembering the time she was a child, before the time she was a furry freak.
Nan smiled, she looked like a person now. And she must admit that she didn't look bad. She examined herself in the gold of the necklace and quickly put it back in her pocket.
Nan tensed as she felt movement in the room beside her. She had a full glimpse of the mysterious people now. Four people. One in red, one in blue, one is white, and one in black. Alongside the unusualness of there outfit they each had there own weapon.
The white one had some silver shurikens. The black one had a long weapon with a curved sword type thing on the top. The blue one had a pair of nun chucks, and the red one had a long silver sword.
"I don't know if I can trust these people, but I may be able to."
Nan got over her fear and took a deep breath. She took a step and before she knew it she was headed for the people.
