Sweet Lies
Summary: In a way, Kenshin's enemies are absolutely right about him.
A/N Do not own.
I am a liar.
Contrary to popular belief, I still see the world in sharp angles, the black and white of night shadows, kill or be killed. People are so simple, so easily manipulated. We are born believing the world to be a perfect place. Many purposefully entertain that deception into adulthood.
I need only affect a foolish smile, a shambling walk, and they immediately dismiss the possibility of threat. Because good people smile, and evil never ventures out after sunrise. It fills me with dismay. They would not last long among the wolves.
Their trust makes me want to hide my face in shame. For they live this sweet lie so well, so sincerely do they try to be good people for the good world of their dreams.
I want to believe this falsehood very much, for as long as we all believe it, the world is indeed perfect, if only within these walls.
It is not easy. Whenever trouble arises, half a dozen simple solutions come to mind –none of which I can even bother considering if I want to live in their world. Not if I care about them at all.
I am not two different people. There is only choosing, and not choosing. I choose to live this sweet lie, unworthy as I am of it.
