Chapter One
I turned off the engine and got out of my car. The house I was standing in front of was huge and looked really old. I walked to the porch and knocked on the door.
A young man opened it and stared at me with confusion.
"Can I help you?" he asked.
"I need to talk to Zach Salvatore." I said.
"He's not here. Should I give him a message?" he offered.
"Tell him that his daughter would like to speak with him and he should give her a call. It's urgent." I told him.
"His daughter?" he was confused.
"Yeah, you're standing in front of her. I'm Viviana Salvatore."
"Zach never mentioned that he has a daughter." The young man turned out to be my
cousin, Stefan Salvatore. We were sitting in the living room, which was actually a salon. There were books everywhere and it had a nice fireplace. Everything in here seemed really old and rusty but it was nice. It had this atmosphere of a real home.
"That doesn't surprise me. I'm not really someone to brag with." I said cynically.
"I mean, how can you hide the fact that you have a daughter from your family?" he asked.
"Well, my dad and my mom were never married. When she found out that she was pregnant with me, they weren't dating for a long time. It was actually nothing serious until she told him that they were expecting a baby. They tried to make our little family work, but when I was seven, they had a huge fight and my mom walked out on him and she took me with her. I didn't saw my dad again until I was twelve, when I begged my mom to see my dad. But still, I don't really see him often." I told him.
"Why?" he wanted to know.
"I think he's ashamed of me. I mean, I am kind of a bastard. I never got to know the family of my father's side. And mom doesn't really like me to see him." I responded.
"And what brings you here now?" my cousin asked.
"My mom seems to have the habit of walking out on her family. She went off with her stupid boyfriend, Kevin and left me behind." I retorted angrily.
"You can always stay here. I have no problem with that." he assured me.
"Thank you! That would be great. But I need the permission of my dad, because he shares the custody. " I replied.
The sound of a closing door and heavy steps reached to my ear. That must be my dad. Suddenly I got really nervous. What if he doesn't want me to live him? I really don't want to live in a foster home.
"Viviana? What are you doing here?" my dad walked over to greet me.
"Hey dad. I need to ask you something." I answered nervously.
"I'm gonna go up to my room. It was nice to meet you, Viviana." Stefan smiled at me.
"Nice meeting you, too." I smiled back.
"So, you didn't tell me you were coming over. Is everything ok?" he sat beside me.
"Not really. Mom is gone." I looked at my hands, afraid of his reaction.
"What do you mean she's gone? Did something happen?" he asked worriedly.
"She left with her boyfriend, Kevin. Yesterday, when I got home from school, she wasn't there. Her room was empty except for a letter. She feels like she's stuck in this small town. Kevin offered her a chance to travel and see the world. She said I should stay with you for the time. I tried to call her but she's not picking up. I hope you're okay with me staying here." I explained, my tears welling up.
"I can't believe she did that. Of course, you can stay. You can choose one of the bedrooms upstairs. Everything is going to be fine." he assured me, pulling me into a hug.
