It was four in the morning when the alarm went off. The sound bouncing off of the walls only to be joined with the terrified wails of little children and dogs howling.

It was four in the morning when Matthias awoke from his restless night of sleep to the feeling of smoke clouding his lungs, threatening his ability to breathe. At that moment his only thought was to get out of that building and to help as many people as he could. With that being the goal he had in mind, Matthias sprung out of bed, running to the bathroom to wet a small towel in order to at least get some oxygen back into his body.

He had thrown open the door only to be greated with a black fog that seemed to be filtering down from the top floors of the apartment complex. He took a moment and closed his eyes, attempting to calm himself before he had run up the stairs to the next floor. Everyone seemed to have been cleared from the level but Matthias wanted to make sure. He couldn't leave anyone behind knowing that they could have been saved. Finally deciding that the floor was clear, he had moved to the next floor up.

The flames were everywhere, bright flashes of yellows and oranges that seemed to be dancing along the hallways. In some places the ceiling had crashed down onto the lower level, causing more fire and more smoke. It was in one of these pile that Mathias had found the boy.

The smell of burnt flesh was sickening and Matthias had to resist the urge to gag as the young boy was pulled out of the rubble. The burns on the boys face were severe, completely covering his forehead and left cheek, but that didn't matter. The boy was still alive and he would be as long as Matthias got him out in time. Breathing in what could have been his last breath, he had broken into a fast run trying to dodge the flames and hold the boy all at once. Everything had felt like it was on fire but Matthias kept running. He kept running until he was out of the building, until he had handed the boy off to a paramedic who would be of more help than Matthias could ever be.

He had taken a deep breath, his first in a while, before he had heard somebody screaming.

"My cat! My cat! please help me!", The lady had cried, tears pouring down her face. "Please! He's all I have left!"

Mathias took another deep breath as the crying continued before he had gotten up and walked over to the lady. Comforting her as best as he could, he began to talk to her, asking her what floor he would be on and what room she had lived in. Before he had time to even stop himself, Matthias said he would go back in and try to find the lady's cat. Without waiting to see her reaction, Matthias had run back to the building lit with the dancing flames, ignoring all of the sounds around him. He had entered the building once again and began to climb the now rickity stairs up to the floor which the beloved pet was on.

There were so many noises around him. The flames crinkling and snapping as they burned the wood. Old structures groaning and shifting as the fire spread, getting farther and farther up into the apartment. There were so many noises and yet it had all been quiet to him. His mind only focused on the end goal. So focused he didn't hear the snap of wood as the roof of the apartment structure crashed down on top of him.

This is basically just a prologue of what is to come later on. It will get better! :)
