Everlasting Friendship

Summary: "Are we still friends, Sonic?"

Meh...I was totally in the mood to write something other than romance...

Merlina, the royal wizard, sat on the ground, defeated. Sonic gazed down upon her, smiling cheekily. Merlina couldn't bring herself to look at him. She felt ashamed.

She wasn't ashamed at losing the battle against Sonic. She was ashamed for hurting him, betraying him. How could she have done this to Sonic? All she wanted was to make her beloved kingdom last forever. She didn't want to fight him, but she also didn't want Sonic to stop her from doing a "good deed". Her hand was now entwined with each other, still refusing to look at him.

In the corner of her eye, she saw Sonic offer his hand at her. She blinked a couple of times before looking at Sonic. The same cheerful smile was on his face.

"What?" Merlina questioned in confusion, staring long and hard at Sonic's hand.

"Need help getting up?" The azure hedgehog asked sweetly; the smile was still on his face. "Come on, I don't bite!" Sonic chuckled, locking his hand with hers.

This startled Merlina a bit, but she didn't yank her hand out of his. She accepted it. Before she knew it, she was back on her feet. Now, since she's taller than Sonic, it's her turn to gaze down upon him. That smile was still on his face.

That was bugging Merlina though. How can he be smiling, knowing that they've just battled each other? Aren't they supposed to hate each other now, be arch enemies? She didn't want to hate him though. She liked being Sonic's friend. And I'm sure he liked being her friend too. Sonic placed his hands on his hips and chuckled.

"What's the matter with you, Merlina?" Sonic questioned, smiling cheerfully.

"Are we still friends, Sonic?" Merlina asked, lowly. She started to twiddle with her thumbs in a nervous way. Sonic smiled and winked at her.

"Sure we are!" Sonic chuckled, taking his hands off his hips, gazing at Merlina.

"We are?" Merlina said in a shocked tone. Sonic nodded his head.

"I've fought almost all my buddies," Sonic explained, "Besides, fighting with you was fun! We should fight again sometime!" Sonic winked at Merlina, causing her to smile...a little.

"Really?" Sonic rapidly nodded his head. Merlina gave Sonic a weird look, but she was happy that they were still friends.
