Spoilers from Mockingjay...I still feel like in that book Suzanne Collins killed all the right characters but at all the wrong times. Still, it is a great series. In this FF, Peeta has recovered from his hijacking, and remembers a good amount of his life prior to that hijacking. Fresh out of my head and into Microsoft word.
Lightening flash. Rue with a spear in her stomach. Shattered glass. Prim holding a package that explodes. Alcohol bottle. Gale being dragged away by peacekeepers. Gun shot. Peeta's empty eyes after his hijacking.
Katniss flinched in her bed, screaming in terror. Each image haunted her more. She then went into sub concious spasms as the images kept going in her head.
Her father's mine accident. A golden mockingjay pin. Blood. A pool of it. Then, the worst. Katniss saw herself weilding her bow, and shooting down each person who she had ever loved. Finnick. Peeta. Gale. Prim. Her mother. Her father. Madge. Annie. Johanna. Beetee. She wasn't sure when or why she loved these people. But she had to protect them.
More images began flashing in her mind, and her screams became louder. Katniss's breathing became short and choked, and then she awoke with a jolt.
Peeta Mellark stood over her, his warm hands had awoken her. Katniss went to speak, to tell him to go away. Katniss didn't need his sympathy. She needed to wallow in her own misery and ultimately die alone. No one deserved to suffer the way she did.
"Don't say it." Peeta's eyes had that glint they used to have, a dazzling, hopeful sparkle. This glint faded quickly."
"Go home Peeta. It's the middle of the night." Katniss rolled over on the other side.
"I owe it to you to stay." Peeta retorted.
"You don't owe me anything. Go home, I'll be fine." Katniss tried to keep her voice firm and steady while saying this.
"Everyone knows when Katniss Everdeen says I'll be fine she's lying." Peeta moved so he could look directly into Katniss's eyes.
"I'm not lying. I'm fine." Katniss lowered her eyes so she wouldn't have to meet his blue ones.
"Then tell me about your nightmares."
"I won't. You're to pure now, you're fixed. I can't bring you back there." Katniss said this solemnly.
"You didn't bring me-"
"Yes I did! Now stop! I'm fine! I don't need your help! I'll be alright! I will!" Katniss rolled over so she faced the other way, trying to hide her tears.
Peeta looked sadly at Katniss, then went to lay on his side so he faced her.
"I'm fixed. You said so yourself. But you're not fixed. Katniss, I'm not leaving until you tell me. That was the only thing that made me better." Peeta went to wipe a tear from Katniss's eye. She swatted his hand away, but then told him all about her nightmares. And then her fears. She even admitted to how guilty she felt telling him, but Peeta simply responded, "That's why I'm here." Then, once Katniss had told Peeta every detail about her nightmares, Peeta talked about his. He said his biggest fear was loosing Katniss, and then Katniss told him he couldn't care for her that much.
"But I do."
"But you shouldn't."
"Katniss, you may think you're just bringing me down, hurting me more. But the truth is, it hurts the most when I need to listen to you scream through the nights, wake up and find your eyes baggy and blue underneath, or when you refuse my help even when you feel so lost and afraid." At this, Katniss silenced herself. And the two stayed awake until morning. And when Katniss looked into Peeta's eyes from then on, they had that same glint in them as before. And Katniss felt the dandelion slowly begin to bloom.
What did you think? I feel like portions of it are a little "No. Yes. No. Yes." I think the word to describe that would be repetitive? Regardless, thank you for reading. :D You win Finnick's trident.
