I DO NOT own Bleach or related titles/characters. They belong to Tite Kubo. (Good thing too, because if I did it would be stick people)

Kuchiki, Byakuya. Captain of squad six. Twenty-eighth leader of the Kuchiki clan. One of the strongest death gods in the Soul Society. And the coldest, hardest shinigami ever. He wasn't always so distant. Years ago he had had feelings; years ago he had been alive. Then the person who made him feel alive, truly alive, had been ripped away.

Some people wondered how Byakuya could be so unfeeling. For him, it was simple. If he showed no emotion, no feelings, it was easier to forget. Easier to forget the pain, the promises, the bonds, all the things that had brought him low. That was all he wanted, escape from the memories.

Of course it was impossible, the thing you wanted most was always the thing you couldn't have. No matter where he went she was there, a ghost made of love and agony. When he woke in the morning he would search for her, but it only took a few seconds to realize she was gone. Looking at the sakura trees outside his house he remembered how she loved them. Whenever he used Senbonzakura he remembered the time he had demonstrated the blade's prowess to her. Instead of being awed or frightened, she had taken his hand and, laughing, pulled him through the flurry of pink petals.

But the most troubling memory came up when ever someone was about to die.

It had been two days since Hisana died and he was still disoriented and confused.

"You know what?" He asked himself. "Forget this; I don't want to live any more." And why should he? There was no one left for him in this life, no one would even miss him. All the promises he had made were nothing but shackles that held him here, he would be free of them soon. So he raised Senbonzakura to his throat, ready to follow his love into the next life.

Something stopped him. Opening his eyes, he beheld Hisana. She looked so sad and disappointed he couldn't look her in the eye. Kneeling, she put her hands over his.

"Byakuya, don't do this. Have you forgotten the promise you made me? How can you keep your promise if you are dead? Find Rukia , for me. Please, be strong, don't cry. You will be fine. Good bye, my love." And she faded into oblivion. Senbonzakura clattered to the floor.

"Hisana!" He screamed so loud that everyone on the Kuchiki grounds heard and came running to see what was wrong. Byakuya threw himself on the floor and wept bitterly. How he missed Hisana! How he wished she was here!

That was why Captain Kuchiki was so distant. It was the only way to protect himself. If he never grew attached to anyone he would not have to suffer like that again. So he would distance himself from others. He didn't need friends anyway.

Or so he thought.

Authors note: Well that was depressing. There will be more chapters to this! I know it probably would be better as a one-shot, but too bad! It sucks I know, but I will get better at writing eventually. Thanks for reading it!
