Kaylee yawned and sighed dreamily. She'd had the best sleep that she'd had in ages last night and felt fantastic. Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, she sat up in bed. Looking around her bunk, she saw Simon climbing down her ladder, and being handed a tray from someone above. Kaylee couldn't identify what was actually on the tray, she was still half asleep and Simon was too far away for her eyes to focus. As he approached, she began to see what he had brought her. There was fresh orange juice, cereal that wasn't all soggy and a bight red apple. Kaylee was ecstatic and squealed, "Aw! Simon! What's all this for?"
"Well," Simon said, "I just wanted to do something nice for you." Simon placed the tray gently on Kaylee's lap and stepped back a fraction. Pulling something out of his jacket, he said, "Happy Birthday Kaylee!" and handed her the red, foil wrapped, heart shaped box. "That's so sweet Simon! Thankyou! You didn't have to, you know." Simon smiled, proud of himself, and said eagerly, "I know I didn't have to, I wanted to…Open the box." Simon stood, awaiting her reaction when she saw the contents of the box. Last time they had touched down on Beaumonde, he had gone the nicest looking gift shop and bought Kaylee the box of chocolate covered strawberries, aka, her favourite. Kaylee gasped as he opened the box, "Chocolate rum balls! Oh, hang on, that's something covered in chocolate, right?" she asked, re-observing the box and it's "inhabitants". Simon's face instantly fell. Something must have happened to them; otherwise Kaylee would have recognised the sweetly coated fruit instantly. He leaned over to examine the strawberries over Kaylee's shoulder and groaned in dismay. "Sorry Kaylee, the chocolate must have melted and stuck them together….damn! They are, or, were meant to be chocolate coated strawberries."
"MY FAVOURITE!!" Kaylee said excitedly, and picked one up and bit into it, "Oh, Simon these are great! Thank-you SO much!"
"Kaylee…I don't get it…Why are you so excited? They're ruined!" Simon queried incredulously. "Simon, I'm excited because you took the time to buy me my favourite thing in the whole 'verse. I don't care that they are melted together, they'll still taste the same, if not better, 'coz you bought them for me." Kaylee smiled at him lovingly, "it's the thought that counts and the love that's harboured inside that really makes a difference." And with that, Simon leaned down a gave Kaylee a huge hug, and she whispered in his ear, "Thanks Simon, for giving me the best birthday present ever."
