Written for xXStandingInTheRainXx's Christmas Songs challenge. My song was "Joy to the World". The ending was exactly how I planned it, but I hope that you enjoy it nevertheless.
Rose should have known that she and Scorpius could never last. They were each other's perfect opposites; two people on each end of the spectrum. They were temping fate by being together. But even though Rose knew that she and Scorpius were destined to be destroyed, she never imagined that it would happen in such a cruel way.
He just said it. No tearful good-byes, no apologies. He looked at Rose, his eyes the same cold color as the star he was named for. Her heart was breaking before he even opened his mouth. She knew what was coming, but she prayed that it wasn't so.
"I don't love you anymore."
A simple sentence that needed no explanation. He turned his back on her and walked through the door, never looking back.
And now here she was, sitting on the floor of her living room, her broken CD player singing fragments of "Joy to the World" over and over again. Rose laughed to herself. "Joy to the World." The perfect irony for her despair.
A God that the world should give its life for? Ha! What did he know? He said that witches are heretics and devils and demons, yet she had never asked for magic, never called it to her.
Rose couldn't help but wonder if Scorpius was God's punishment for her. But then she would ask herself why she should be punished for something that she could never control?
Rose rolled over and cried to herself. Why must she be punished by a God that never loved her and a man who had never given his heart to her? Why?
Rose sat there and wept, asking herself those questions throughout the night, listening to "Joy to the World" the entire time. And when the morning's first rays came into her flat, Rose still could not come up with an answer to the questions.
