I stood upon the battlements. The cool breeze whipping my hair about me. The dark was cold and the sky was held together only by tiny pinpricks of light. Smoke furled into the night though most of the fires had been extinguished, but here and there an ember still glowed. I hated to see my beloved Camelot like this, brought to her knees and broken. I took a steadying breath.

'Well I guess I ought to wish you luck'

'Guinevere' he whispered into the wind, 'please understand' he said laying a hand on my shoulder.

I turned to face him for the first time.

'I do understand, I do' I said in hushed tones, 'You have to do this, and have to let you. Neither of us could bear to see Camelot destroyed and while there is a chance, no matter how small, that you can stop that from happening, you have to try and I have to support your decision' I said matter-of-factly.

'I-' he began.

'Sire?'

'Thank you Guinevere' he said his eyes bright with starlight.

'Thank you?'

'For making this easier for me'

'I am only saying what is in my heart. I know that you are the future King before all else and I would not have it any other way.'

'I'm sorry' he said eyes shining with emotion.

I reached up to cup his cheek in my hand.

'For what?' I asked with a sad smile.

'For never being the man you need, the man you deserve'

'But you are the only man I want' I said sombrely.

He removed my hand from his face and turned away, suddenly agitated.

'Don't' he hissed.

'What?'

'Just don't!' he said wheeling around and taking my hands in his, 'swear to me, if I don't come back tonight you will run from here, you will save yourself and you will forget me, you will move on with your life' he implored earnestly.

'I would try, if you promise me, if our positions were ever reversed, you would do the same'

'I would try' he said with a half smile, running a thumb across my cheek.

He leant in to kiss me, every particle of me was drawn to him, like a bee to nectar, wanting to feel his mouth on mine, to hold him, to taste him. But reason won and I pressed two fingers to his lips. He gave me a quizzical look.

'You will have to come back for that'

'Well that's an incentive if there ever was one' he flashed me one of his best boyish grins.

I smiled back and we fell into a dense silence, which weighed on both our hearts. We knew what came next.

He opened his mouth to speak.

'Don't Arthur'

'Then what am to say?'

'How about I'll see you later?'

'I will see you later Guinevere' he said inclining his head towards me and ducking through the door.

It still had sounded a lot like Goodbye.
