Prologue:

Ursa hurried along frantically, carrying a bundle in her arms. Her facial expression was one of great pain, for she had just given birth to twin girls.

She tried to keep them secret from Ozai. She saw the way he treated poor Zuko, just two at the time, and she never wanted her daughters to have the same fate as their brother. He looked just like Ozai, but different in a way that she couldn't understand. He looked more innocent and curious, big golden eyes filled with ignorance. He would find out one day what his forefathers had done. She didn't want her daughter to be brainwashed like Zuko most likely will be. But Ozai found out. And now Azula was his.

But he still didn't know about Roze.

She had snuck out of the palace, where she was supposed to be resting, while the Healers were asleep. She knew she would be very sore and tired later, but she had to get her daughter to safety. Even if that meant giving her away.

She walked just to the palace gates and stood where she was supposed to be meeting Daisuke. Daisuke was one of the palace's servants, and the only person she told about Roze. He had helped her with many things, but he was recently banished. She decided that he would be the one to bring her to safety.

Minutes passed. Ursa was starting to feel faint.

"Daisuke?" she whispered into the midnight air. There was no answer.

Ursa was starting to get worried. Daisuke was known for his forgetfulness. But he would never forget about Roze.

When he finally came, though, she was extremely relieved. He held out his arms to take the baby from her, but she hesitated. It made her feel strangely sad. "Just give me a minute to say goodbye." He nodded.

She looked at the sleeping face of her newborn daughter, serene, peaceful, and innocent. She kissed her own hand, and touched the baby's forehead. "Good luck, Roze." she whispered, so quietly she could hardly hear herself. I will leave this place one day, Ursa decided. I will leave after Zuko and Azula are grown, and I will go and find Roze. A single tear slid down her face, and she handed the newborn to Daisuke. She watched silently as Daisuke and Roze glided away in a canoe.

Ursa never saw Roze again.
