The dark and somber eyes stared blankly at the wall. It had, in fact, been a millennium since it had done anything else. Trapped here, the great and noble body had long since ceased to move. The earth shook, and the age long stupor was broken. The great head shifted, and the eyes gained a spark of long lost fire. The secret had been broken. The chamber was breached. At long last, it would be free.

It was approached. With amusement, it watched as the insignificant mortal stumbled around in the dark. It wouldn't be lost for long, the Ancient was hungry. With a groan of the once shimmering scales, it moved forward, intent on the prey. The mortal lifted its head. "Stop" the human hissed. The basilisk jerked to a halt It had been a long time since one worthy of its worship had approached it. But, as it was created to do, the great monster bowed its head in acquiescence. " Assss you command it, My Lord" the creature hissed in response. It sighed internally, there would be no feeding this day. Seeing that it wasn't in moral peril at the moment, the mortal continued. "Guard this chamber against those who would harm its contents". The basilisk again agreed. After setting a small book in the shadows, the man departed.

The basilisk returned to its slumber. This, after all, was its life. Created to prowl in the shadows, the beast was in its element. Watching and waiting for its master to return.
