HOWLING FOR THE DEAD
A Oneshot About Bluestar's Death
Dogs chased me. I ran furiously. Jaws snapped at my legs. Teeth closed around one of them. As I neared the gourge, I knew that I was about to die. I wanted StarClan to receive me well, as a good leader and a kind mother. Would they?
I was hurled over the edge. StarClan, thank you for being by my side! Help me! I couldn't believe it. I was really dying. I splashed into the water and became weaker. I sank. I felt something moving near me. Teeth and claws dragged me out. This was all Tigerstar's doing...Tigerstar's fault...
No. Don't think negatively.
I opened my eyes when a cat spoke to me. Thank StarClan! It's Fireheart! He saved me! Blinking hard, I realised that my kits were nearby, too. "You saved me," I croaked.
Mistyfoot mewed something about not talking. I paid no attention. "I want to tell you something...I want to ask you to forgive me for sending you away. Oakheart promised me that Greypool would be a good mother to you. I owe Greypool so much. Oakheart, too, for mentoring you so well. I watched you as you grew up, and I saw how much you had to give to the Clan that adopted you." I shuddered. "If I had made a different choice, you would have given all of your strength to ThunderClan. Forgive me."
Fireheart urged my kits on. Mistyfoot and Stonefur forgave me. I purred happily. They were my kits, and I had made a mistake, and now my kits were forgiving me for my mistake. How wonderful!
I closed my eyes as Tigerstar approached. My breathing...it became rough. Fireheart tried to stop me from dying. "Oakheart," I whispered. "Have you come for me? I'm ready."
Fireheart didn't want me to go. I explained to him that I had to help him, and that he was the fire that would save the Clan. He was going to be a great leader. Firestar of ThunderClan, the saviour of the Clan!
"You will be a great leader," I meowed. "One of the greatest the forest has ever known. You will have the warmth of fire to protect your Clan, and the fierceness of fire to defend it. You will be Firestar, the light of ThunderClan."
"No. I can't. Not without you, Bluestar."
I sighed. The light in my blue eyes dimmed. I knew that StarClan would accept me, because I could see Oakheart, a starry, silver cat figure, tinged with red-brown, like the Oakheart I knew as a living cat.
In my last moment in the forest, I heard a faint sound, the sound of a dog howling for the dead.
