Chapter Title: Same Fate, Different Beginning

Halloween night, 1981, Godric's Hollow
It was a quarter to midnight and James and Lily Potter had already tucked little Harry Potter into bed and call it a night themselves when a 'click' was heard from downstairs.
They ran down the stairs with James's wand out and Lily hiding behind him to see who the intruder was. In the living room, they saw him. Lily gave a scream while James shouted to her without turning around, "Lily, take Harry and go! It's him! Go! Run! I'll hold him off!" Lily casted a worried look at James and a frightened one at the intruder before running up Harry's room. A few minutes later, a cold and shrill laugh and a scream was heard.
"Oh my god, oh my god," Lily whispered, trying to calm a crying Harry. Then, another 'click' and the door opened. Lily stood in front of Harry.
"Not Harry, not Harry, please not Harry!" She pleaded.
"Stand aside, you silly girl... stand aside, now!" The intruder said coldly, sending shivers up Lily's spine. She stood her ground.
"Not Harry, please no, take me, kill me instead." She pleaded again.
"Step aside, it's not you I want." Again, the intruder refused her plea.
"Not Harry! Please... have mercy... have mercy." She begged.
"Very well then. Have it your way." With that, he sent the Killing Curse her way, letting out a shrill laugh as she screamed her last scream. Finally, after a while, he pointed his wand at Harry.
"Avada Kedavra!" Green light shot towards Harry - only to have it bounce back at the intruder.
"No!" He shouted as the green light hit him and ended Lord Voldemort.
Remus Lupin was in a deep sleep when a baby's cry woke him up. His werewolf hearing enabled him to hear things from miles away. Usually he ignored them but the baby sounded just like... Harry!
He immediately pulled on a robe and flooed to Godric's Hollow. Thank god that the full moon was a few days ago or else he would have absolutely no energy to floo whatsoever. "Oh my goodness," he said slowly as soon as he got there. He looked around and paled when he saw James's motionless body.
"James!" Remus ran over to said man's body to find that there was no pulse. "No," he said softly. Running upstairs, he once again found that Lily had no pulse as well. Falling to his knees, his teardrops fell freely.
"Mooy?" Remus's head whipped up. "Harry," he whispered as he picked the baby up and held him as close to him as possible. Harry used his little thumb to wipe away his tears. That's when Remus saw the lightning-shaped scar on Harry's forhead.
Remus traced it with his finger. The breathing in his chest evened. He looked down. Harry had fallen asleep. Remus gave a small, tearful smile.
He had failed Lily and James. The least he could do was take care of their son.
With that thought in mind, Remus flooed back to the Lupin Manor with a new task: taking care of his dead best friends' son.
