Stranger in a familiar universe

Prologue

I should be dead. The last thing I saw or felt was a eighteen wheeler slamming into my car then my car slamming against another wreck on the highway, then what felt like a donkey kicked me in the back barely moments later and the world vanished. It would only be later that I puzzled out that I had been in a chain accident and that I really wanted to thank that kind farmer for not monitoring the lands next to the highway for fire more thoroughly. The smoke hanging over the highway had been so thick I hadn't seen a thing beyond my windshield; I had had barely a second to comprehend this and the danger, before the accident occurred.

I was, however, clearly not dead. I was now lying propped against the wall of a long hallway of some kind. It was deserted and there was something else a feeling maybe? But I wasn't sure. I put all this in the back of my mind by carefully moving my extremities and examining myself for injuries.

Amazingly, I felt fine. I was sure I would at least have a high degree of whiplash, given that I was wearing my safety belt and I had felt my neck and upper back jar from the impact.

I carefully stood up, using the wall for support at first, then feeling no balance issues, let go and walked back and forth on the spot. Yeah, no problems there.

I turned my attention to my surroundings and its familiarity struck me, but I just couldn't place it. It did have a distinct sci-fi vibe for some reason. Was I dead? Was this my personal heaven? Purgatory? I had been in a car accident, then oblivion, now I was here.

Not having anything better to do, I did a quick 'eeny meeny miny moe' to determine which direction to go, turned left and just began walking.

I finally passed a door. I turned the handle, while prying that this was not a horror movie.

The door opened to show another hallway that was also empty.

With nothing to lose I went down the hall.

Still after a few minutes I didn't run into anyone but I did pass a flag that had a familiar image of a simple yellow forward-facing pointer shaped pennant, with a round blue backdrop with what I think could be stars behind it and more stars going down from the top stopping a little bit past the pointer and at the bottom was AD ASTRA PER ASPERA.

Which was a Latin phrase that could mean 'Through hardships to the stars, A rough road leads to the stars or To the stars through difficulties' basiclly stuff that space agencies would use for mottos.

I knew what that symbol was but I just couldn't think of it and it was driving me crazy cause I knew what it was I just couldn't get the words to form.

I had just turned a coroner when.

"Stop right there" a voice behind me said. I turned around and saw three men. Two were pointing some kind of pistols at me.

But it was the one in the middle that caught my attention the most.

Cause standing there, with a stern expression on his face was Maxwell Forrest.

Ah shit.
