Summary:
"I've been waiting for you" she would say, and she would put her arms around Lan's neck and kiss him.

Lan raised his hand to touch her face, but a few inches away he froze. He inhaled sharply and stared at her face, her eyes, and her mouth. She was smiling, as if she sensed his hesitation and found it amusing. Maybe she did? He could not be certain. Lan got lost in her smile, and her beautiful eyes. Was this love? With all his willpower he forced himself to touch her. His hand closed the distance between them, and he gently stroked her chin. She was still smiling, but her eyes were different. They were sparkling, vivid, they were alive. Neither of them moved, they stood there watching each other.

A sudden noise behind them caused Lan to jump and retrieve his hand. He turned around to see what was going on. He squinted into the dark but could not distinguish anything; he came to the conclusion that it probably was an animal. No danger, nothing that wanted to kill him this time. He turned back to face her again. He inhaled her scent, it filled his nose. A delicate aroma of fresh roses surrounded her. Fresh roses? What was he thinking? He shook his head, trying to clear his mind.

Lan should not be thinking about roses, or love for that matter. His future is already decided and there is not anything, or anyone, that can change his destiny. He is destined to live and die alone, but to take as many of the Dark Lord's creatures with him as possible!

In another turn of the wheel perhaps he can have this life. He would have a loving wife and a few children. Their children would be running around, playing and screaming. He would earn his living in a normal way, not hacking and slashing through herds of trollocs. And after a hard day of work, he would go home to his cottage. Maybe he would even own a farm? He would enter the front door and bellow to his family that he is home. His wife would be standing there, wiping her hands in an apron before approaching him.

"I've been waiting for you" she would say, and she would put her arms around Lan's neck and kiss him.

The reality is what it is, nothing can change that. He looked at the woman in front of him. She was still smiling at him. She could be his true love, his soul mate. But in this turn of the wheel, she will not be his, and he will not be hers, not in any way. They would never be together. He shoved his hands in his pockets and turned around, facing the darkness. He did not know what was out there in the dark and dull forest. A terrifying howl could be heard, a shivering chill went down Lan's spine. He put his hand on his sword hilt and started leading the way through this damned place. He would get her safely out of here, and if he could prevent it, without a single scratch. And hopefully, he would get to spend as much time with her as possible, and maybe just maybe, he would be lucky to live an entire life with her, in another turn of the wheel. This thought put a smile on his face while he determinedly forced his way through this ruined woods.
