Yahiko slowly walked towards the lady lying in bed before his eyes. His step seemed to be as heavy as the one before it. His tears threatened to flow yet he kept it intact. No, he won't cry.
Kaoru would be mad at me if I cry and wallow in self-pity.
When he was totally in front of his sensei. He gazed at her features. Her hair was black as before and her face was white as snow.
He longed to see the anger rose from her blue eyes but he knew he won't. He longed to be hit by her bokken again or taste her poison-like food. He longed to be yelled " Do five hundred katas now!!!" by his sensei. He longed for Kaoru to be alive again.
Kaoru. The girl that gave him a home, a family.
" Hey Kaoru!" he had said aloud through his tears. He smiled ironically.
" Busu!" he yelled again as if Kaoru would get up and bonk him with his shinai.
Nothing. Just the still ambience of the room was heard.
" Hag!" he tried again and this time he tried to shake her. Tears flowed freely from his eyes.
" Hey Busu wake up will you?" his voice almost failed him, " we have to do some practicing."
Again nothing. Yahiko burst into tears once more.
This is it! Kaoru was gone and never to be seen again, heard again.
Shaking himself from his state he looked at her again. He reached for her cheek and caressed it. He leaned into her ear and whispered;
" Have I ever told you you're beautiful?"
Then as if Kaoru answered "no". Yahiko smiled and nodded.
" You are the most beautiful kenjutsu master I have ever seen. You were, still is and will always be."
Silence.
Yahiko again spoke this time he was smoothening Kaoru's hair.
He stared at her face enchantingly.
" Hey and have I ever said, "thank you" to you?"
Then as if Kaoru answered " no, why and what for?", Yahiko answered back;
" For giving me a home, for tolerating my attitude, for being my big sister, for making me stay in this dojo with no questions asked, for..." Yahiko trailed off, his voice to garbled to speak.
" loving me."
Yahiko silently finished as he hugged the girl who has the biggest heart in the world.
All his life, Yahiko was busy commenting on Kaoru's cooking, tomboyish attitudes and temper that he did not take a second to tell Kaoru how he simply wished to thank her.
For everything. And she wasn't going to hear it, not now, not ever because she is dead.
Outside the room, Sano silently wept. He walked out and left the dojo. He looked up the sky while walking.
" Hey Jo-chan!" he wandered aloud as his tears flowed freely from his eyes.
" Thanks for everything, thanks for giving a family, and as well as the free meals."
At that Sano laughed ironically like Yahiko. All his life he was busy teasing Kaoru that he forgot to say a simple " thank you" to the girl who gave him a family. And she never heard it in her life. She never will.
" You know I always cared for you, don't you?"
Sano pulled out his sake and raised it in the heavens.
" JO-chan!" he cried aloud. " This one is for you!"
Then he gulped every last drop of the sake until he fell into a deep slumber dreaming of the blue-eyed assistant master of Kamiya Kashin School of Swordsmanship.
