Prologue - Summer
Present:
She always enjoyed days like this – just him and her sitting outside on the porch swing together with nobody to bother them. She enjoyed the cool late summer breeze, the beautiful but early reds and golds and browns and yellows that seemingly fell from the beautiful blue sky onto the ground. She enjoyed the time she had now, without the pressure of school or work or finding a guy, the time she now invested in him.
She liked how they fit perfectly into each others arms.
He usually liked to take this together time and doze off. She preferred to watch him. Usually when she did it would relax her, soothe her until she didn't have a care in the world and she drifted off too. But today was different, she knew, even though she knew he didn't. Or maybe he did. She wouldn't have been surprised. There were several times where she had underestimated him, only to have him prove her wrong.
She frowned. That wasn't her point. Her point was that today was different. Today was important.
So today she stayed awake.
But, she thought, the trouble with staying awake was that one had to think too much. Much like she was doing now. Thinking was overrated. She had created that philosophy back in high school and had stuck with it throughout her life. Of course, there wasn't any reason to change it. Hey, she reasoned, if it ain't broke, don't gotta fix it. Besides, she was the kind of girl that liked to act first and think later. She took a quick glance at his sleeping form.
Act first and think later. Not today, she knew, but back then had been a whole different story, and he was the main example of why she didn't need to anymore. Or maybe why she didn't have time to anymore.
It was almost funny, if it hadn't been so not at the time. In the beginning, she knew that he was a mistake. She wasn't old enough, or so she thought. She wasn't ready to get involved in that kind of relationship, although she shouldn't have been surprised. The way she went around, someone was bound to have wanted to give her more than just a night of pleasure.
It was an accident, she supposed, since she had thought she had protected herself from such an occurrence. But it did happen, and soon after she had found herself in love and the happiest she had ever been. And each day had just been better and better than the one before it.
If all mistakes had consequences like that, she would try to make them more often.
She smiled, then quickly grew serious again as she tried to pinpoint the exact moment that she had accepted this, accepted him. She tried to remember when she had stopped being Brooke the bitch and became who she was today – settled down and content with her life. She supposed it was sometime around the time where she first met him. She knew though, that the story began way before he had come into her life.
Luckily, she knew where that began.
