Bruise Easily By Chimmie
She looked at herself in the mirror and almost cried. This wasn't her. The girl stared back at her with deep blue eyes that revealed she hadn't slept for weeks. Her hair was limp and dull, not the shiny strands she was used to. Her face looked ten years older and had lost its golden glow. It was also evident that she hadn't eaten in days, since there was nothing but skin and bones on her body. She continued to observe the change she had gone through in just the past month. Everything was happening so fast and she just wanted to stop time. Tears clouded her vision as she thought about how happy she had been two months ago. All was right in her life.
"This can't be me." She thought to herself as she looked at the reflection one more time.
She quickly blinked her tears away as she convinced herself that things weren't as bad as she thought they were. She hopped into the shower and let the warm liquid pour over her tired body. She winced as the water stung the many bruises and cuts on her body. She felt so dirty. She grabbed the soap and scrubbed herself hard, as if she was trying to clean every single one of his fingerprints off of her skin. It never did help her to feel clean though. She soon realized she couldn't wash her emotions away, no matter how much she wanted to. She felt like she should just give up. After the shower, she quickly concealed the bruises on her body and her puffy eyes, caused by the many tears she shed. She hastily dressed in her usual jeans and t-shirt and put on a fake smile to rid the world of any suspicion it had of her being in pain.
"I'm leaving for school now…mom!" She called as she walked into the warm living room. The smell of breakfast floated to her nose and she began to feel a wave of nausea overcome her. She clutched her stomach in pain as it growled with hunger. She ran out the door before her mother could ask her to eat breakfast. She was afraid of food, afraid to eat, which was the one thing that gave her comfort.
Outside she looked up at the clear blue sky as she took in the fresh air as if it was food. The wind gently danced around her and the sun filled her body with its warm loving rays. In this moment, she felt pure again. She stood there staring at the sky, soaking up as much light into her soul as she could fit. Time stood still right then and everything felt so right. Then her mind slowly began to haunt her with thoughts of last night's events.
Flashback
She cautiously walked into his hushed apartment as if she were a burglar looking for some type of fortune. She frowned at his lack of safety.
"He's never going to learn to lock his door." She thought as she gently closed the door behind her. The apartment was dark and a bit chilly for her taste. She guessed the air conditioner was the cause behind the unpleasant temperature. Thick shades covered all the windows, blocking the sunlight from reaching the room. She tiptoed her way over to his small but cozy couch, where he lay. She could see his chest rise and fall leisurely with each breath he took. His face was turned away from her and his right arm casually rested behind his head. She warily sat down next to him on the edge of the sofa and reached out to smooth his hair back from where it has fallen over his eyes. He stirred in his sleep when he felt her tender touch upon his head. She let out a small giggle as he turned his head towards her and opened his dark eyes to glare up at her.
"Hey Sere…
