Author's Note: Hey everyone, it's Akuhei! It's good to finally be back. The school year was hectic and since Kawaii and I are unfortunately attending different schools, it was almost impossible to even see each other. The idea for this short oneshot came to me last night at an ungodly hour, and I simply couldn't get back to sleep without writing it down. I hope you enjoy it! Kawaii and I are coming out with a new story very soon. Keep a lookout for it; it'll be called Nobody Knows.

It was like any other day in Konoha. Birds were singing sweet nothings while perched upon tree branches, arrays of multicolored flowers were nestled between vivid green grass, and not one cloud obscured the sun's domineering presence over the land in the mesmerizing azure sky. Perfect.

A day when every child was joyously playing without a care in the world, one was alone, left to ponder.

My eyes…

A knowing Hyuuga watched silently from a distance, observing a young boy peering into a rivulet tucked away in the cool forest. His dark chocolate locks wisped in a sudden, brisk breeze. The sight was almost magical, but the elder Hyuuga knew better. A serene outward appearance was just an allusion to restless inner thoughts.

She made her way towards the child with slow, even paces, almost as if her intrusion would break the calming silence. Her steps ceased as the face of the child appeared in the crystal-like water, right next to her own. To any other being, the young boy looked expressionless – devoid of any trace of emotions – but a mother always knew better.

After a few moments of continued silence, a faint whisper was heard.

"Why?"

She remained silent; she knew just what he was referring to. Not choosing to answer yet, she continued to gaze at the reflection of her son.

Again, the boy spoke. This time, the words were barely audible.

"My eyes."

The phrase was then followed by a glare, almost as if he was trying to provoke his eyes to show any emotion. Still, only the same distant orbs looked back at him.

"They're beautiful," was the response that finally came. Indeed they were. The silvery irises were unique to only the members of the powerful Hyuuga clan. A true gift to have.

"They're empty."

Although they lacked color, the Hyuuga eyes were definitely not empty. Generations of determination and pride from the ancestors of the clan were etched into each and every one of its members.

"All the color in this world can be found in your eyes."

As if to prove a point, a ray of sunshine hit the water, making it shimmer. Still viewing his reflection, the child saw a palette of pigments emerge where once ivory eyes gazed. In an instant, the same eyes returned. This time, though, there was no denying it.

A rainbow.

Hyuuga Neji finally understood the meaning of his mother's words. He didn't need colored irises to feel whole; he had every color of the rainbow.

Suddenly, he didn't feel so empty anymore.
