I was the new girl in camp, a daughter of Hephaestus to be exact. My mother had said that I was a menace, and that I should find Camp Halfblood.
Chiron, I think it was, had instructed me to find Bunker 9.
"How on the Gods' green earth am I supposed to find Bunker 9? What is Bunker 9? What's in Bunker 9?" I had prattled off, confused and distraught.
"Patients small one," he had said calmly. I sighed a long, exasperated sigh. I'm not "little", I thought. I'm fourteen! "Follow the burn marks," he whispered.
So that's what I did. I followed the burn marks. They lead into the woods, winding around trees, until I found what must've been Bunker 9.
"Hello?" I called as I poked my head inside. What I saw next was disturbing.
A boy, probably around sixteen or seventeen, was bobbing a head full of dark curls all over the place. He had on, at least what it looked like, a homemade iPod. His caramel colored skin was reflected in the bronze plate he was holding, and in the plate, I could see his brown eyes glinting maniacally. Not only that, but his hands were on fire, though it didn't seem to bother him. But the singing, if that's what you can even call it, was the most disturbing part of it all.
"THIS GIRL IS ON FIRE!" He wailed. The boy turned around and I could see my reflection in his eyes. We looked quite similar, but my eyes were darker and his hair was darker.
As soon as he took off his earpieces, he gave me a quizzical look. His eyes glinted with glee and he looked at me dead in the eye and said, "Light 'em up!"
"What? Are you insane?" I asked. Then I looked at his hands, still on fire, and proceeded to tell him to throw the balls of flame at me. He didn't even hesitate.
In an instant, my jeans, boots, and new Camp Halfblood shirt were set ablaze. But it felt good, comforting almost.
"I'm Leo, captain of the Argo 2 and leader of Hephaestus cabin!" He beamed.
"Jordan," I said. I looked at Leo, this scrawny scrap of energy and asked, "Where's the cabin? I'm exhausted."
"You won't be able to miss it!" And with that, I was sent back into the woods.
