Running
One Shot
A lone, tall man ran through the dark and rain. The sun was minutes from rising.
Slap, slap, slap. His feet hit the wet pavement. Water splashed from under his foot. Split, splat, splat. The rain pounded the pavement.
Sam ran for so many reasons. Mostly he enjoyed the freedom running gave him. He could leave the mildew inns and his brother's accusing glances. He could be alone with his thoughts.
Split, split, splat. Sam's soaked hair was flat against his head causing his bangs to invade his eyes. He didn't bother moving them. He didn't notice them.
Slap, slap, slap. He hummed along with his IPod. He glanced to his right and found his running partner was barely keeping up. Sam smiled at him and urged him on. Come-on. Keep-up. Let's go!
He ran to remember. Sam had demons, literally demons in his closet. Running gave him time to reflect on his life and his choices. He'd made some bad choices. This reflection time freed him from regret. Regret that would eat alive if he let it.
Split, splat, split. You'll have to work harder to catch me. Run faster! He stayed ahead of his running partner. Running gave him freedom. Freedom from the devil was the greatest gift. If he could just stay ahead of him, things would be ok.
Lightning flashed through the sky. Sam turned toward the hotel. I'll race you! I will beat you again today. He sprinted as hard and as fast as he could. He knew his running partner was trying to catch him. He felt his hot breath on the back of his neck. He picked-up the pace just enough to get to the Impala first. He was panting from the sprint but quickly regained his breath. He turned around and smiled at Lucifer. You lose. I'm free today.
Sam entered the hotel room as Dean was waking up. "Dude, running this early and in the rain?" Dean stretched and sat up.
"I have my reasons. I'm showering first." Sam went into the bathroom, shut the door and smiled at his reflection.
