A/N: I had written this a few weeks ago but yesterday's episode gave me the right inspiration to make it better. Enjoy!
Nathan sat behind his desk and reread a sentence for the fifth time hoping it would finally make it into his brain. Most of the report he had moved his eyes from line to line, simply looking at the words, his mind not actually forming the mess of letters into anything meaningful.
Nathan gave up and started pacing the length of his office in an attempt to rid some of the restlessness out of his limbs. He had felt this many times before. The feeling usually came after he sat and forced himself to study a textbook or a brief for several hours until he had gained everything he could from it. At the end of this marathon effort, his body rebelled at the prospect of being contained by four walls. In his younger days the feeling was quelled by a run around campus or a jog down the block. Now it was different. It wouldn't go away with a quick jot down the street or a drive. He knew what he needed and he was ashamed of it.
Nathan called the car service, grabbed his coat and waited for the vehicle to take him to the apartment he rented in DC.
Sitting in the back of the town car, the restlessness in Nathan's legs was rapidly turning to pain, the pain of being forced to stay in an uncomfortable position for too long. He had gone too long without satisfying his need to move. Nathan felt like a junkie (or what he believed a junkie must feel like). He ticked off the blocks as they passed. Only six blocks to go.
He shouldn't deny himself so long, Nathan mentally chastised himself. He knew he felt more anxious, more on edge. People notice a difference in him. Danko noticed. Two blocks.
If given half a chance Danko would take him in too. Make it easier to "eliminate" the threat powers posed.
When the car slowed to a halt, Nathan exited the town car and headed for his sedan. He knew that Danko was watching him. He had to avoid any cameras; traffic, ATM, a kid trying to prove alien existence who posts all of his "results" on YouTube.
As suspicious as it may seem seeking out to a heavily wooded area in the dead of night, Danko wouldn't act on him without conformation. If he didn't, all the power he gained would be gone in an instant if he accused a US Senator of being a freak when there was a possibility he was sneaking off with a hooker. No, Danko wouldn't move based on his gut.
After driving for some time, Nathan reached a field. About a hundred yards from the road, the tree line started. Nathan walked in his high end leather shoes and custom tailored suit through the brush. Nathan marched into the forested area as if he belonged there as much as he did at a State dinner or a court room.
Nathan continued to tread though the undergrowth for what seemed to be any agonizingly long time until he could see nothing around him but trees and nothing above him but stars.
Looking in all directions to confirm once again that he was alone, Nathan bent his knees and took to the skies. As he soared over the area feeling the wind crash into his face, all of his problems seemed to be lifted from his shoulders.
As guilty as Nathan felt sneaking off, hiding his flying fix from everyone, he knew why junkies do what they do despite all the reasons to stop.
Nathan, like any junkie, did it for the high.
Review and let me know what you thought.
