He notices something different the moment she comes back from her excursion to the whorehouse; her pupils dilated, her breathing is uneven, her entire posture is exhausted as she slips through his door

(He thinks she comes here out of habit now; doesn't want him to think she's kissing Chuck in a darkly-lit limo )

She gives him a weak smile, says yes, thankyou to spaghetti

( he imagined that grimace-everyone loves spaghetti )

They sit and eat and talk about the film they saw last week and how it made them think about life, and how we treat it. Do we take risks every day, should we? Maybe safety is better, because then you can't get hurt

( She looks out of his vast window overlooking the city and a familiar feeling sneaks up on him. He pushes it away with irritation )

She chose him, and the other one is a thing of the past. He's hurt her too many times to count, and nobody could love him after all that.

He wants to be her safety net

( needs to be? )

and makes sure she knows it as he wraps his arm around her shoulder, like he did all those months ago, places a kiss on her head

( did she just...flinch? )

He imagines everything, he supposes, he's a writer after all, and he's with his muse. Fitzgerald was with his muse and they were happy, weren't they?

Finally she puts her head on his chest, but her eyes are still open, she's still thinking

( of dark limos and even darker souls, probably )

He wanted to give her everything, all the things she deserved, but he looks at the other one these days, improving his life and getting stronger and better and worries that he just might be enough for her now, he might be becoming a man, the man she wants

Making her happy is all Dan really has in his court, along with adorable movie dates and lively banter

( although the banter has dissipated lately, in favor of sweetness and light and holding on to her )

Her phone buzzes; she jerks upright so fast she's surely got whiplash

"I've got to take this, Dan"

Pats him on his shoulder in a friendly, familiar way

( is that how she loves him? Does she even- )

He pushes it away. He won her, after all - not a Prince, not him, Dan Humphrey has Blair Waldorf all to himself

( Is that why she shuts the door to Jenny's room? )

He thinks he misses the days when they denied they were anything resembling friends.
