Hey guys! This fic randomly jumped into my mind and I finally decided to go for it. Real short and sweet, but hopefully it's still okay!

She sighed as she gazed at them all. So happy. Everyday she went through life just wishing that someone would be there, to guide her, to keep her close through all of life's struggles. She sucked in a deep breath as she started to feel tears touching the corners of her eyes. There was no way that she would let loneliness get the best of her.

She was used to it, after all.

She was jealous, although her pride refused to admit it. She didn't like being around people because she felt awkward being the odd one out. That's why she usually stuck to herself. Without really meaning to, her eyes wandered slowly towards one of the boys in the café. He was always nice to her. His name was Marius, although she didn't always refer to him as that. She usually didn't refer to him at all. She just liked it when he was there, with her.

She sometimes wondered if their friendship was out of pity for her. She knew he was aware that she wasn't rich. Despite this, she was grateful for his company all the same.

In fact, more than his company.

Every single time she would look at him, her stomach would flutter and she could forget about all of the pain and sorrow that was her life. He made her feel safe, a feeling that didn't come often, and she would for once be warm and happy.

But that couldn't be hers, she remembered.

Her head lowered. She loved the boy, of this she was sure. But he didn't love her back, which hurt the most. But her heart was used to the hurt. Every day she would see him, so happy, in bold contrast with herself, who was always so sad.

"It's okay though," she murmured aloud. Reassuring herself. "It's fine. Everything is fine."

But it wasn't, and her heart knew it.

"Eponine!" The girl's head shot up at her name. Looking around in the dim light, she saw none other than another street urchin not much younger than herself.

"Gavroche." She spoke his name. He could always put a smile on her face too.

"What're you doin'?" the boy asked.

She shrugged. "Not much," she replied casually.

Gavroche blinked. "Okay." When she didn't move to reply, he said, "I'm gonna go… grab a snack. Yeah. See ya!"

As he scampered away, Eponine realized that her nonchalant attitude must have made him think she was mad at him or something!

"Oh, no…" she whispered. The last thing she wanted was to get on bad terms with someone she held so dear.

Now the tears were coming. Much harder now. Oh, how she hated herself! Leave it to Eponine to do something stupid, she thought angrily.

Shakily she took a breath. Because it hurt, hurt so much. Everything about her life hurt. Over and over, every day, she was reminded why.

The people she loved didn't love her back.

She knew from the beginning that Marius was blind to her. She was all right with just their friendship until that other girl came along. Cosette. She was there when they saw each other too. She remembered feeling her heart break into a thousand pieces.

Because, right then, she knew he was hers.

Jealousy was overrated. She knew that. But something about what they had made Eponine yearn for something more.

Her dark hair brushed over her eyes but she made no move to push it away.

She was alone.

Eponine walked down the dark street, away from the lights of the café.

She was alone. And that would never change.

:(

Have a good day.
