Last Goodbye

Water as cold as ice rained down from the dark, angry sky, soaking his hair and his clothes, the fabric clinging to his body like a second skin. Shivers plagued him, traveling up and down his spine like cars on the freeway, fast and uncontrollable and relentless. His teeth chattered, clicking together loudly in his mouth, and a sharp pain and the warm taste of copper told him he'd bitten his tongue and it was bleeding. Water ran down his forehead and trickled into his eyes, blurring his vision, warping the tall silhouettes of buildings and the twinkling brightness of lights in the darkness. His hands and face and body were numb, it was a relief to be unable to feel.

"Hey." Danny's hair was as wet as the liquid falling from the sky, his clothes three shades darker with absorbed moisture.

"Hey." His cupcake was soggy, it fell apart between his fingers, and he watched the chocolate run and form a puddle on the pavement. "Is everything.."

"Yeah." Danny moved to stand closer, radiating heat from their bodies penetrating the freezing shower of water.

"It's not going to work." They both knew it wouldn't work; they'd both known from the beginning. Danny had known before he'd had the idea and Rusty had known before Danny had said it. Sometimes it was a burden to know a person so well, to know the reasons behind their actions when you didn't want to.

"I know Rus, but I want her back." Danny placed a hand on his shoulder, squeezed it through the damp cloth. The touch said he was sorry, sorry for everything, sorry for loving her, sorry for leaving him, sorry for being selfish, sorry for needing more then him, needing more then them. Danny could be a selfish man, he wanted someone to go home to when the heist was over, and Rusty couldn't go home with him, not every time. Danny needed Tess to fill the void when they parted, no matter how brief it was.

"I'll.."

"Me too. Four years isn't that long." The rain stopped, last bits of water dripping off his face and onto the cement, the heat from Danny's hand washing over his body like rays from the sun. He could wait four years for Danny. "Don't get bored."

"I'll try." Danny's footsteps were silent as he walked away.

He glanced up at the sky when he was alone again, when he could hear sirens wailing in the distance, bright red and blue lights rushing towards his best friend. The moon had come out from behind the clouds, shining bright and silver, illuminating the wet, glistening world.

His footsteps made soft splashing noises as he walked away.
