Tears could taste so bittersweet, and yet Alfred wasn't sure if that was because of the woman that cried them. Daina was the sweetest person that Alfred had ever gotten the chance to meet yet when she cried, his heart twisted painfully in his chest.
He just wanted to pull her close, somehow wipe the tears from her eyes, and help her come back into the joy that they both shared. Alfred wanted to hold her like she was a precious gem and more whenever she cried, convince her that she wasn't as broken or used up as she felt.
If he could take an eraser to her scars and wipe them away so very easily, he would. Alfred hates to see Daina in pain, because she never ever deserved that kind of pain, the kind of pain that seemed to always find her and cling to her so much.
"Daina, can you see just how amazing you are?" Alfred murmured as he held her closer, trying to make their heartbeats temporarily feel like one, trying to make her at least a little happier.
"N-No, I'm really not." She wiped away some of the tears off her face as she stared up at her husband, "You're the incredible one here. You're so happy and kind."
"I'm really not that happy, but I do love you." Alfred whispered against her ear as he tried to calm her down, tried to find words to soothe her tears, even as her dreams caught up to her, taunting her with false accusations and harsh words against her or memories that she longed to forget and yet really couldn't seem to forget.
"I love you too." Daina nestled against his shoulder as her tears spilled down between them on her bed, and she couldn't help but cling to him as if he was her last lifeline, the last thing to calm her down.
For tonight, this was all that needed to be said, and yet when they did talk it over in the morning with hopefully clearer heads, he hoped that she came to feel much better as if the memories could be sorted through and she could move on.
Alfred just wanted his wife to be happier once again even though it wasn't nearly as easy to make true once more.
