Hi!
It so seems that I'm going through an "Uchiha Phase".
Whatever that means. 0.o
Anyway, I'm having a hard time writing the second chapter of "ObsesSion", so I'm trying to get the gunk cleaned out of my writing system, so to speak, and this is what there is.
Spoilers for those who haven't read chapter 385, I'm sorry. That's where all the dialogue in the beginning is from. It struck a chord with me.
And the song title (which is the title of the story, and inspiration) is from Fall Out Boy. Because I love them. With a passion.
Enjoy!
"I can't force you to believe me, that's your choice. People live their lives bound by what they accept as correct and true. That's how they define "reality". But what does it mean to be "correct" or "true"? Merely vague concepts…their "reality" may all be a mirage. Can we consider them to be living in their own world, shaped by their beliefs?"
"What are you getting at?"
"Like the way you simply decided that Madara must be dead.
Like the way you believed I was a kind, caring brother."
He had tried so hard, all his life, to pretend it had been just another nightmare, not unlike the ones that plagued his dreams and thoughts day and night forever thereafter. He had almost convinced himself that he had convinced himself that was all it was by repeating the mantra: once I kill him…
Once he killed Itachi, then what? Once he dispatched this…Madara, then what? What would he do then?
Calm down. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
And he's here, now. He's listening to the poisonous words that slide across his skin and snake their way into his brain and he realizes again that he's been reverted back into his child-like state.
"Like the way you believed…"
And he still believes it, that's why the feeling of betrayal won't go away. He's assured himself for so, so long that he hadn't been blind that now that the truth is staring him in the eye with its evil, swirling bloody crimson gaze he can't help but shut his eyes tight out of habit to keep the truth at bay.
"…I was a kind, caring brother."
As he stares into the spiraling abyss that are the eyes of truth, Uchiha Sasuke realizes that he's tired of singing the tune his god-damned brother had him mimicking. He realizes that he's tired of squeezing his eyes shut: his mission now has a new meaning. No longer is he going to kill Itachi out of revenge for his family, in a desperate attempt to sustain the lie that was the image of his once caring brother.
He was out to kill that lie. He was out to kill Itachi, and to kill that remaining inkling of his childhood façade.
This was reality.
FIN.
