Knee Scrape
"Hey, do you remember that time, Jack?"
Jack turned towards his smaller, dark haired friend with narrowed eyes. He stopped walking and shoved his gloved hands in his pockets.
"Yusei, what are you talking about?"
Yusei kicked a few pebbles and gestured at the expanse of road in front of him.
"That time that we ran along this road! Every time I walk this road I think of it."
"Yusei, you dimwit, we ran along this road every single day when we were kids. We ran up until… well, you know," Jack scratched the back of his head and looked at the ground, digging the toe of his boot into the gravel. "We ran that day I left, too."
"Yeah, I know, but remember that day that I… that I tripped?" Yusei peeked at Jack out of the corner of his eyes, waiting for the memory to make its way back to the front of Jack's mind.
Jack closed his eyes, and reflected on this "tripping incident"…
…. Jack, hey wait up!
Jack cackled, not slowing down in the least for his younger companion.
"You're a wimpy runner!" Jack called over his shoulder.
He skidded to a stop, however, at the sound of crunching gravel and a pained yelp. Jack turned around and groaned.
"Aw, Yusei, you stupid butt, what are you doing down there?!"
"I- I fell…" Yusei sniffled and clutched his knee. Jack frowned at the gesture and walked back toward his friend.
He kneeled down next to Yusei and examined the damage. "Wow, you sure screwed your knee up, huh?"
"Yeah…"
Jack inhaled and looked quickly around once, twice, three times. He placed his hands gingerly around the wound on Yusei's knee, leaned in, and kissed it.
Yusei sat, too dazed to cry. Jack's eyebrows met quickly.
"What's your problem?"
Yusei gestured at his knee, but was cut off before he could speak.
"Shut up. I only did it because Martha says that kisses make everything better, and," Jack grumbled to himself, trying to come up with a reason. "And I have royal kisses on my lips, so it's like double power. Now come on. We have to get a band aid from Martha."
Jack extended his hand and pulled Yusei to his feet, and kept a hold of his hand, and began to walk back home…
All of it had happened in the exact same spot where the pair, much older, now stood. Jack, having recalled the memory, became thoroughly embarrassed. Yusei chuckled at the shade of pink that crept up onto Jack's ears. He elbowed his friend in the side and looked down at his feet.
"We sure did some crazy stuff as kids didn't we?"
For a brief second, Jack's fingers brushed Yusei's. He pulled his hand away, but smiled at the memory.
"Yeah, we sure did."
