Jefferson liked Wonderland once; he liked it when he was there with Alice.

Alice is a beautiful, curious, gentle, and fascinating woman. Her flowing blonde locks and trim little fingers lure him in, like a snake before its charmer. Her vivid blue eyes are innocent, full of trust and untouched by worlds of hate and betrayal. He knows that he has to take care of her, this young rabbit, whose goal in life is to not nibble at the clover, but to explore every hole there is.

They wed soon enough. Her bouquet is baby's breath, pale and petite like herself, and his tie is purple. An indifferent caterpillar offers vague congratulations before they run, giggling, away from the ceremony and into their married lives.

She is wonderful and he'll do anything to protect her, though he doesn't need to. Alice turns out to be very handy with a sword, and the queen's servants are always caught off guard. The queen wants her dead. Alice doesn't explain much. But he loves her, and she loves him.

She is going to have a baby. They both cry, and he takes her in his arms and spins her in, an action of pure joy. She is very petite and it doesn't take long for her to show. He is thrilled, excited to see the physical evidence of a child growing there.

Her excitement is infectious, though her sickness is not. When she smiles, it briefly lifts the bags under her eyes. She is having trouble sleeping and can't keep much food down. Jefferson brings her mushrooms from the forest, for he knows they're her favorite. He worries. The pregnancy is hard on her. The baby grows large and her face grows thin. He rubs her back and talks to the baby when it gets restless. Their baby always listens to him.

She tells him she feels claustrophobic. She loves her baby, but after all, it is moving rather relentlessly inside her. She has nightmares of the baby being ripped away from her and she wakes up screaming. It kills him. She is going through too much.

The queen still wants her dead.

Alice gives birth painfully, squeezing Jefferson's hand and trying not to appear weak. She struggles. He panics. It takes a lot time, but Grace enters the world. She is beautiful and looks like Alice. She cries and so do her parents. She is a miracle.

They are surrounded a week later. Alice is still recovering. She tells him to go. He refuses. Two came into Wonderland, only two can leave. Alice shows ferocity he has never witnessed before. Go. Take Grace and go. They'll come back for her, she knows. She winces as she rises out of bed and slings her sword around her shoulder. She kisses her family and won't take no for an answer.

She must run.

Take care of our daughter, Jefferson.

Run fast, my rabbit.

He had to leave Alice, and it drove him mad.
