I was idly thinking about 7.15 (the season 1 Snowing episode) and how a Captain Swan version might go, and Ruby popped into my head saying "You're not fooling anyone, you know…"
So, here is a tiny tiny one shot… :)
—
It was almost 9.20, time for Emma's second cup of the day. Sure, it was often her third or fourth, but the idea was she would try to limit her coffee intake by making one of her morning doses a treat from Granny's.
The bell chimed as she pushed open the door. As was often the case, Killi… Hook was leaning on the counter, chatting to Ruby as he ordered supplies or whatever it was that brought him in so much. Her lips twisted at the thought 'maybe it was Ruby…' before she quickly squashed the rising jealousy. What did she care if he was wenching…?
Emma slipped onto a stool at the end of the counter furthest from Hook, waving to acknowledge Ruby's 'in a minute' gesture, before dropping her chin onto a clenched fist and staring at her reflection in the mirrored wall of the diner. So engrossed in her mindless contemplation, that the slap of an order pad on the countertop made her jump as though shot.
Ruby grinned wolfishly. "You're not fooling anyone, you know…"
Emma frowned. "I'm not entirely sure what you mean…" she replied, raising an eyebrow.
"You and Hook." the brunette said with certainty.
Emma leaned back, shaking her head. "No, no, no!" she denied. "I really don't know what you're thinking is happening, but there's nothing going on!"
"I know!" Ruby wailed, dramatically. "And yet, you come in every day for coffee and he conveniently happens to be here at the same time…?!"
"He never stays…" Emma protested weakly.
Ruby scoffed. "Have you ever asked?"
Emma looked away, mildly guilty that she only ever told him to push off.
"If you saw the way he looks at you,"
"That's his normal expression!" Emma interrupted.
Ruby shook her head. "When you walk in, his eyes glow and his face softens; as though there is nothing in the world that makes him more content than seeing you."
Emma opened her mouth to retort but Ruby held up a hand. "He doesn't even need to talk to you, just see that you're here and, well, you - I guess!" she laughed. "That pirate is all yours, Sheriff; why don't you tell him you're waiting to be captured?!"
Emma hid her face in her hands. "It's complicated…" her words were muffled but the wolf girl heard them perfectly.
"It doesn't need to be…" she pointed out gently. "Neal should be nothing more than a bad memory."
Emma's head dropped onto the counter with a thump.
"I'm scared, Ruby. Every time I love someone, bad things happen… Look what happened with Henry!"
The brunette shook her head. "That's the best thing about it taking two - there's someone with you! And I never said anything about love…"
Emma glared at her friend, who shrugged it off with a merry chuckle.
"If you need an excuse to visit his ship, you can deliver his order."
"And then what?!" Emma cried.
"That's up to you…" Ruby said sagely.
