Escape
The cell was dark and cold. Sirius paced back and forth, the sound of his footsteps the only thing keeping him sane. His long black hair fell in his eyes, his tattered clothes hung on his lank frame. He could feel the chill of dementors as they made their rounds. The moans of the soulless lulled him to sleep. He jerked awake afraid to be so utterly defenseless.
His mind constantly looked for some mistake in security, something to help him escape. He heard a clank as bread and water was shoved through the bars of cell. He wasn't hungry, but he forced himself to eat, preserving his strength. He curled up in a corner for warmth and fell into a restless sleep.
………There was a blinding green flash. He heard the screams, tried to fight his way through the ruble. He couldn't get there fast enough The screams stopped. He fought harder. they couldn't be gone. There was another flash only it was above him this time, the dark mark floats hauntingly in the sky. Sirius falls back against the ruble, all hope lost. From deep in the house a baby cries……….
Sirius jerked up, a cold sweat soaking his brow. A rat is scurrying in the corner, scratching at the stone, searching for a way out. Sirius could feel the dementors come closer as he watched the rat search. The cold hopelessness became unbearable. The rat gave up on the wall and ran out the bars as the dementors swooped by.
It hit him, out of nowhere, he knew how to escape. He had to wait though, his timing had to be perfect. He forced himself to sit still by thinking of the freedom he would soon have.
Two days later……..
Sirius waited until the dementors were close enough to sense him, they were only a couple of yards from his cell before he phased. The dementors sensed it, the lack of human presence. They entered the cell through the gate on the left side, as they opened it the big black shaggy dog bounded through.
Sirius ran for all he was worth, knowing that this was his only chance for freedom. He followed his nose searching out fresh air. It didn't take long, soon he was standing on a rocky cliff with the waves crashing below. He could see land off in the distance. His decision was quick. With a running start, he jumped.
The water was like ice, hard and cold, as it tossed him against the rocks. He struggled for the surface. Salt water filled his lungs. He could see the surface, the sun beating against the water, then blackness.
He could feel small hands tangling in his thick coat, The warmth of the sun on his muzzle, water lapped at his paws. Coming too, he coughed up salty seawater. Sirius leaped to his paws, scattering the little kids who had found him lying on the beach. With nowhere to go he ran inland into a muggle city. He stopped under a bridge, where he collapsed too exhausted to do anything but curl up into a ball.
The dream returned, only this time he found a small baby boy in the rubble, and a rat scurring away from the house.
