It was half past midnight when Sora abandoned his room for a glass of cold water. Lately he'd been having trouble sleeping; either not being able to or waking up every fifteen or so minutes.
Grudgingly, and still groggily, he walked down the hallway past Riku and Kairi's bedrooms. Upon closer inspection, their doors were left ajar. Not wide open, but not exactly clicked shut. In their shared household, this usually signalled that the occupant was elsewhere.
Dismissing this at such a late hour, he continued quietly down the steps. Up ahead, he noticed the fireplace was alit, casting an orangey glow to encompass the living room.
He couldn't see anyone from where he was standing at the base of the hardwood stairs. However, if he were to turn the next corner, he'd come to see the sitting area, from which two voices could now be heard in soft conversation.
"I don't know if I can do this, Kairi." That was odd. Riku sounded... apprehensive, grieved. Two things that would NEVER be confused with the high and mighty Riku.
"You can do anything, Riku. I know you can." Sora stealthily peered around the corner to see Kairi holding his shoulder comfortingly. Why did he need comfort? What was going on?
"This is so out of character of me. It's awkward." He grumbled. Sure sounded out of character! But alas, it was the silver-haired young man not ten feet away.
"Most situations like this are." Situation? What kind of situations? "Now come on, say it to me straight." Ooh, juicy gossip to hold over Riku's head ~
"I like you."
Sora's heart stopped. But Riku continued. "I've liked you for as long as I can remember. I've liked you ever since we were kids." What? How could this be?
"So I think it's obvious that you've been on my mind since then." Sora stole another glance at the sitting room to confirm what he was hearing. But alas, it was Riku who was talking. To Kairi.
The brunet's stomach fell. He never admitted it to anyone but himself, but he'd liked Riku all his life. Was I so blind as to not see he felt the same way about another person? About KAIRI? Now it was too late.
"You and I are first and foremost best friends, and always will be. But..." Oh God, but? He knew they were close friends, but closer than him and Riku?
Sora blinked away tears at the hanging conclusion. "I want to be more." He barely finished the confession, as Sora felt fat tears falling down his cheeks.
"And if you'd let me," Oh God, there's more. "I want to be your boyfriend." Sora reached his breaking point. He couldn't hear any more. Slowly but silently, did he exit the hallway from which he had been listening from, and disappeared out the front door.
Not before, however, he heard Kairi's triumphant response. "Oh Riku, you're so sweet!"
He'd definitely get no sleep tonight.
"Oh Riku, you're so sweet!" Kairi hugged him wholeheartedly, all the while squealing in his ear. "Sora's gonna PLOTZ!"
Riku bashfully returned the praise with his embrace. "You don't think it's too… corny?" He asked her.
"Well, yeah. But!" she added, taking in his abashed expression. "It's what you feel right? So it's okay!" He chuckled.
"I hope so."
