Ice Age Memories
Cougar walked into the motel room he was sharing with Jensen, surprised at the quiet. Just the sound of the TV, the lights dim. He frowned. Jensen normally greeted him unless he was completely absorbed in something on his computer and then there'd be the sound of keys tapping frantically as he worked furiously, trying to convert the ideas that swirled in his brain. There was often the background sound of Journey coming through tinny on the laptop's speakers.
But not tonight it seemed. Tonight there was the low murmur of voices from the TV and nothing more.
He turned, closing the door, before leaning back against it to take in Jensen's form. He made a pitiful sight, curled up in the corner of the small couch, bare feet resting on the edge of the seat, knees tucked tight up to his chest, with his arms wrapped round them, staring at the screen, a picture of heartbreak on his face.
Cougar glanced at the screen to see what he was watching and knew instantly what was the matter. Setting down the bag of groceries in the small kitchenette area, he paused long enough to set his hat on the table and his jacket over the back of a chair before he crossed over to Jensen's side and slipped his arm around his best friend's shoulder, pulling him closer and resting his cheek on the top of Jensen's head.
"She's safe, Jay, they both are. I know you miss them and I promise you that when this is all over, the first thing I will do is take you back there."
Jake shifted and twisted round, letting his feet drop to the floor as he curled in against Cougar's side. "We always watched this together. She loves this film. Diego is her favorite, she always said he reminds her of you. Totally badass, but soft underneath . . . not that she said that but I can see it, you know."
Cougar could hear the sadness in his voice and wondered whether to turn the TV off or whether it was better to watch it together and give Jensen the time to reminisce and allow him the time to be sad at all the things he was missing.
"And which one is you?" Cougar wondered trying to decide for himself who each of them would be.
"She never could quite decide, sometimes she said I was like Sid, always making everyone laugh and sometimes she thought maybe I was Crash or Eddie."
Cougar didn't attempt to hold back a snort of laughter, "She could be right." Jensen flapped a hand against his stomach in protest, but then left it there as he relaxed and instead just let himself follow Cougar's breathing.
"Thank you for sticking with me," Jensen said a while later.
"Always," Cougar said. "We stick together and we iwill/i go home. Then we'll watch the movies together. All of them." He kissed the top of Jensen's head and the two of them watched the rest of the movie without another word.
