My heart beats faster as the drum roll begins and I force myself to remain impassive as the guards escort Janius from the gaol. His gaze finds mine, dark eyes betraying neither fear or regret. I rise, resisting the temptation to smoothe my dress, nodding towards the herald, who addresses the crowd.
'By order of Queen Kitya, the accused has been sentenced to death for the murder of twelve citizens of Teseoa, having pleaded guilty to these charges. The sentence will now be carried out.'
The guards forced Janius to kneel in front of the block, where the masked headsman stands, hands resting on the handle of his axe and the herald turns back to me.
'Your Majesty, we await your final judgement.'
